Participants are=20 being sought for a unique fundraiser preceding next week=92s visit = to St.=20 Bonaventure University by Rwandan Holocaust survivor Immacul=E9e = Ilibagiza.=20

Ilibagiza, = who=20 escaped the 1994 genocide by hiding in a 3-by-4 bathroom with = seven other=20 women for 91 days, will deliver a keynote address at 7 p.m. = Thursday, Nov.=20 20, at the Reilly Center Arena. Her inspirational book, =93Left to = Tell:=20 Discovering God Amidst the Rwandan Holocaust,=94 was this year=92s = All=20 Bonaventure Reads selection for the freshman class.

For = three days=20 prior to her visit, eight-member teams will spend 10 minutes each = in a=20 replica of the closet-sized room so as to gain a better = appreciation of=20 Ilibagiza=92s ordeal and to raise money for her foundation to aid = Rwandan=20 orphans.

From 9 a.m. = to 5=20 p.m., Monday through Wednesday, eight-member teams will spend 10 = minutes=20 each in the replica bathroom, which will be set up in the Reilly = Center=20 lobby. Volunteers are being sought from campus and surrounding = communities=20 to fill the 91 scheduled time slots. Each team is asked to raise a = minimum=20 of $10 in donations.

=93We need = to get all=20 91 sessions filled in order to complete our goal and to raise a=20 substantial amount of money for Immaculee=92s charitable = foundation in=20 Rwanda,=94 said Stephanie Herzig, a graduate assistant in St. = Bonaventure=92s=20 First Year Experience program.

Teams of = eight=20 members each are being recruited for the fundraiser. Ninety-one = time=20 slots, one for each day the author hid, need to be filled. For = available=20 time slots and details, go to www.sbu.edu/lefttotell.

Dr. = Carol=20 Fischer, professor of accounting and a charter member of the All=20 Bonaventure Reads committee, has reserved two time slots. She will = share=20 one with some of her freshmen students, the other with fellow = members of=20 the First-Year Experience council.

=93While I = expect to be=20 uncomfortable, both physically and emotionally, during my two = scheduled=20 10-minute slots, I am in awe of Immaculee and the other women who = spent 91=20 days in such uncomfortable conditions, listening to the atrocities = just=20 outside the window,=94 said Fischer. =93I am humbled by the small = sacrifice=20 that I will make in memory of her horrific experience. = Immaculee=92s=20 capacity to forgive and her continued dedication to the people of = Rwanda=20 inspired me to support this fundraiser.=94

Rob = Hurlburt,=20 associate director of facilities for maintenance at St. = Bonaventure,=20 oversaw construction of the replica bathroom. Hurlburt read = Ilibagiza=92s=20 book last summer, but it wasn=92t until he stood in the replica = that he=20 truly appreciated her story.

=93The = reality of=20 seeing this is very humbling,=94 he said. =93We talk about the = difficulties=20 and worries that we have, and then you envision someone going = through this=20 experience.=94

The = three-day=20 fundraiser runs Monday through Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The = 10-minute time slots begin on the hour and at 15-minute intervals=20 thereafter, allowing for five minutes between sessions.

Former prof to kick off = Honors lecture=20 series

A former=20 St. Bonaventure University professor returns to campus this month = to=20 inaugurate a new Honors Program lecture series.

At 7 p.m. = on Monday,=20 Nov. 24, in the Rigas Family Theater at the Regina A. Quick Center = for the=20 Arts, the Honors Program will be hosting a lecture by Dr. Susan = Abraham=20 titled =93Intellectual Charity: Pedagogies of Hope and = Transformation.=94 In=20 it, Abraham will describe her vision of the =93theology of = teaching,=20 reading, and studying.=94 The lecture is free and open to the=20 public.

Abraham is = an=20 assistant professor of women=92s studies and ministry at Harvard = Divinity=20 School and a former assistant professor of theology at St. = Bonaventure=20 University. She specializes in Roman Catholic studies, feminist = theory and=20 theology and postcolonial theory.

Abraham has = extensive=20 teaching experience and has authored various peer-reviewed = articles, book=20 reviews, research and presentations worldwide. Abraham is a member = of the=20 national work group on Constructive Theology, the Steering = Committee on=20 Theology and Religious Reflection AAR, and the CTSA Admissions = committee.=20

Dr. Mark = Huddle,=20 director of the Honors Program, said Abraham is =93one of the = smartest=20 people I=92ve known in my 15 years of academia,=94 which made her = an excellent=20 choice for the first Honors Program-sponsored lecture.

The Honors = Program is=20 comprised of some of the best students that St. Bonaventure has, = and the=20 program has =93a responsibility to enhance intellect on campus,=94 = said=20 Huddle. He hopes the lecture will show how the =93Franciscan = vision of the=20 University can be applied to the real world.=94

Abraham = received her=20 bachelor=92s degree in 1984 in English and her master=92s degree = in 1986 in=20 English from the University of Mumbai, India. In 1995, she earned = an=20 additional master=92s degree in theology from Catholic Theological = Union,=20 followed by her doctorate in theology from Harvard University in=20 2003.

SBU to host Native = American=20 Celebration

St.=20 Bonaventure will recognize Native American Heritage Month by = hosting the=20 university=92s first Native American Heritage Celebration Nov.=20 10-21.

The = celebration,=20 sponsored in major part by the Diversity Action Committee, is free = and=20 open to students, faculty and local community members.

The = two-week long=20 celebration includes lectures and discussions with guest speakers = who will=20 focus on different aspects of Native American culture. The = celebration=20 comes to a close with a performance by the Seneca Youth Dancers = and tours=20 of the Native American exhibit at the Regina A. Quick Center for = the=20 Arts.

Angela = Jones,=20 university vice provost for enrollment and student academic = services, came=20 up with the idea for the celebration as a way to reach out to the = local=20 Seneca Nation tribe and promote ongoing relations within the=20 community.

=93The = celebration is a=20 means to educate and inform students about the wide array of = Native=20 American culture, particularly the Seneca Nation,=94 said Jones. = =93Our hope=20 is that students come away with a better understanding and = appreciation=20 for Native Americans.=94

St. Bonaventure to mark 25th year as = participant in=20 Semester in Spain program

To understand why = the Semester=20 in Spain program has flourished at St. Bonaventure University for = 25=20 years, talk to program participants, said Alice Sayegh, director = of=20 International Studies at St. Bonaventure.

=93My time = in Seville=20 was the greatest time of my life,=94 said Kari Tarnowski, a St. = Bonaventure=20 senior and modern languages major who plans to attend law school = next=20 year. =93I met some of the most interesting people from throughout = the=20 United States and the world.=94

Eileen = Snyder Finn, a=20 1995 St. Bonaventure graduate who teaches Spanish at = Allegany-Limestone=20 Central School, said her experience in Spain =93became the = cornerstone of my=20 teaching career. The semester abroad provided more experiences and = opportunities than imaginable.=94

Olean = native Jane=20 Watson Joy graduated from Quincy University in Quincy, Ill., and = attended=20 the Semester in Spain program through St. Bonaventure in 1994. = =93It was=20 truly the highlight of my college career,=94 she said. =93I can = remember=20 thinking to myself that all college students who have the = opportunity to=20 study abroad should take advantage of it.=94

Students = from more=20 than 400 U.S. colleges and universities have participated in the = Semester=20 in Spain program since its founding in 1979 as a joint initiative = between=20 Broward Community College (now Broward College) in Fort = Lauderdale, Fla.,=20 and the International College of Seville. The program is offered = through=20 the College Consortium for International Studies (CCIS). St. = Bonaventure=20 joined the CCIS in 1984 and became a key cosponsor of the Semester = in=20 Spain program, enabling University of Seville courses to be = approved by a=20 four-year partner institution.

Next year = marks a=20 significant double anniversary, said Sayegh: the 30th anniversary = of the=20 Seville program itself and the 25th anniversary of St. = Bonaventure=92s=20 partnership in it.

=93I=92m = proud that the=20 university has attained this level of longevity with an overseas = academic=20 program,=94 said Sayegh. =93Many programs are not grounded = institutionally to=20 allow them to flourish for three decades.=94

St. = Bonaventure has=20 been the portal through which many students in the U.S. have = entered the=20 program. =93Not only students from St. Bonaventure and Broward = have enjoyed=20 the excitement of studying in the south of Spain, but students = from=20 Cornell, Vanderbilt, Catholic University of America, the = California and=20 Massachusetts state systems, Colgate and others have participated = in the=20 Semester in Spain through St. Bonaventure,=94 said = Sayegh.

The program = has=20 evolved over the years to accommodate changing interests and = demands. A=20 summer program was added in 1999, and an Arabic Studies summer = session was=20 added in 2008. Additionally, over the past five years, the = University of=20 Seville has opened up French, German, Italian and Arabic courses = to=20 parallel the Spanish program.

Semester in = Spain is=20 a total immersion experience, said Sayegh. =93Spending four months = studying=20 and living in a culture such as that of Seville, in the heart of=20 Andalusia, is like no other experience in Spain,=94 she said. = Andalusia has=20 a history rich in Arab and Jewish influences and places students = at an=20 =93incredible cultural crossroad,=94 said Sayegh, adding the = program=92s courses=20 have evolved to immerse students in the region=92s history, art,=20 architecture, music and language.

Seville = remains an=20 intimate city, despite its population of nearly 1 million people, = offering=20 students the perfect =93city as classroom=94 experience, said=20 Sayegh.

Maggie = Canavan=20 Wilkosz, a 1999 St. Bonaventure graduate, said she=92s transported = back to=20 Seville whenever she opens the photo album of her semester there = in the=20 fall of 1997. =93There are times I catch a smell in the wind and = it takes me=20 back to walking along the Guadalquivir River, or through El Parque = Maria=20 Luisa.=94

She said = the=20 experience shaped who she is today.

=93As a = 20-year-old on=20 the verge of a great adventure, the last thing on my mind was how = my=20 semester in Seville was going to affect my self-confidence, my = network of=20 friends and my future career choices,=94 said Wilkosz. =93When I = look back at=20 that trip, however, I see how much it affected each. I returned = from=20 Seville with a self-confidence and awareness I am not sure I would = ever=20 have reached had I not gone on this adventure.=94

SBU Jazz Band to swing = Nov.=20 19

The St. Bonaventure = University=20 Jazz Band, directed by professor of music Dr. Les Sabina, will = perform=20 Wednesday, Nov. 19.

Free and = open to the=20 public, the concert is from 7:30-9 p.m. in the Rigas Family = Theater at The=20 Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts.

The band = will be=20 playing original jazz pieces written by variety of composers, = including=20 Mike Dana, Doug Beach and Sabina.

This facilitator=92s guide accompanies Build With = Living=20 Stones (BWLS), an adult educational resource for an exploration of = the=20 Franciscan encounter with contemporary society.
