University recognizes five outstanding = faculty=20 members

St. = Bonaventure=20 University recognized five outstanding faculty members Saturday, = May 10,=20 during its annual Honors Luncheon and again during the = University=92s 148th=20 Commencement Exercises Sunday, May 11.

Patrick J. = Casey,=20 Ph.D., associate professor of education, and Donald J. Swanz, = J.D.,=20 associate professor of accounting, received the Award for = Professional=20 Excellence in Teaching; Oleg V. Bychkov, Ph.D., associate = professor of=20 theology, received the Award for Professional Excellence in = Research and=20 Publishing; Patrick Panzarella, Ph.D., associate professor of = English,=20 received the Award for Professional Excellence in Service; and = Darryl J.=20 Mayeaux, Ph.D., assistant professor of psychology, received the = Junior=20 Faculty Award for Professional Excellence.

Dr. = Patrick J.=20 Casey, who has over 45 years of classroom and administrative = experiences,=20 has been a full-time faculty member in St. Bonaventure = University=92s School=20 of Education since 1998. Colleagues and students alike describe = him as a=20 charismatic, demanding and supportive instructor who inspires his = students=20 to be as dedicated to the profession of teaching as he = is.

=93Patrick Casey=20 was meant to be a teacher,=94 two of his colleagues wrote in their = nominating letter. =93Dr. Casey=92s ability to connect with = students and his=20 willingness to talk with them at any time regarding educational, = personal=20 or career issues demonstrate his deep sense of respect and caring = for each=20 individual.=94

Students praise=20 his ability to motivate and to seize any teachable moment that = comes his=20 way. His courses are rigorous, his standards are high, and he = challenges=20 students to be =93better than good.=94 At the same time, he is = known for the=20 support and guidance he extends to students, and for nurturing=20 student-professor relationships that often extend well past=20 graduation.

Casey = has served=20 as director for the Educational Leadership Program and the = Adolescence=20 Education Graduate Program at St. Bonaventure. He was instrumental = in=20 bringing the Preparing Tomorrow=92s Teachers to use Technology = grant to the=20 School of Education.

A = native of St.=20 John=92s, Newfoundland, Canada, he was a teacher and administrator = at high=20 schools in Canada. He is a former microcomputer resource center = director=20 and adjunct instructor at Teachers College, Columbia University in = New=20 York, and a former assistant professor in the School of Education, = Nursing=20 and the Health Professions at the University of Hartford in=20 Connecticut.

He = earned a=20 bachelor=92s degree from Iona College, bachelor=92s and master=92s = degrees from=20 Memorial University of Newfoundland, two master=92s degrees from = Teachers=20 College at Columbia University, and his Ed.D. from Teachers = College at=20 Columbia in 1991.

Donald = J. Swanz,=20 Esq., joined the School of Business in 1981, and since then has = been a=20 =93valued teacher and faculty member,=94 said Dr. John G. Watson, = School of=20 Business dean. =93His courses are always highly popular with the = students,=20 and his teacher evaluations over the years have been=20 extraordinary.=94

Swanz = created the=20 China Studies Program, an offshoot of having been invited to the = People=92s=20 Republic of China as a guest lecturer in 1993 and 1994. Since = 1997, when=20 the first group of 14 departed for Beijing, the annual program has = sent=20 some 225 students overseas to study the history and culture of = China, and=20 the obstacles to doing business there.

An = attorney who=20 practiced law for 49 years, Swanz has taught a variety of = law-related=20 courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. He was primarily = responsible for developing the Legal Environment of Business = course that=20 is a core course in the MBA program, and was solely responsible = for=20 development of content for International Legal Environment, a = popular=20 elective in the MBA program.

Dr. = Charles=20 Coate, associate professor of accounting, said Swanz is =93at his = best=94 in=20 the =93unique and challenging educational environment=94 found at = St.=20 Bonaventure=92s Buffalo Center at Hilbert College.

Swanz = earned his=20 bachelor=92s degree and law degree from Georgetown University. He = has served=20 on the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, the American = Academy of=20 Legal Studies in Business, and the European Community Studies=20 Association.

Dr. = Oleg V.=20 Bychkov has been a member of the Department of Theology at St. = Bonaventure=20 University since 1999. His contributions to research and = publishing are=20 many and varied, said Dr. James Fodor, associate professor of = theology, in=20 his nominating letter.

=93Oleg=92s main=20 publication achievement to date is his two-volume edition and = translation=20 of Duns Scotus=92 Parisian Lectures, produced jointly with Fr. = Allan Wolter,=20 one of the most widely recognized scholars of Duns Scotus,=94 said = Fodor.=20 Volume two of the 2,500-page, two-volume set was completed by = Bychkov on=20 his own, he said.

Dr. = John Mulryan,=20 Distinguished Board of Trustees Professor of English, called the = Duns=20 Scotus set a =93notable achievement, not only for scholarship in = general,=20 but for Franciscan scholarship in particular, as Duns Scotus is = one of the=20 leading philosophers of the Franciscan order, as well as a thinker = who is=20 taken very seriously by modern linguistic = philosophers.=94

An=20 internationally recognized expert in theological aesthetics, = Bychkov has=20 published numerous articles, translations and book chapters on the = subject=20 and has three book-length scholarly works in progress. He has also = organized three international academic conferences, two of them at = St.=20 Bonaventure. He is also a member of several editorial = boards.

Bychkov = has a=20 diploma in classics from the University of Moscow. He did = post-graduate=20 study at the University of Moscow and the University of Oxford. He = earned=20 his master=92s degree and Ph.D. from the University of = Toronto.

Dr. = Darryl J.=20 Mayeaux has been an assistant professor in the Department of = Psychology=20 since 2003. A graduate of Loyola University in New Orleans, he = earned his=20 master=92s degree and Ph.D. from the University of California at = Davis,=20 where he was an associate instructor from 1993 to 1995. He was a = National=20 Institutes of Health postdoctoral fellow at Cornell University = from 1999=20 to 2001.

=93While there are=20 many outstanding teachers at St. Bonaventure and also many = successful=20 researchers at this University, it is rare to find an individual = who=20 excels in both areas,=94 said Dr. Robin Valeri, Department of = Psychology=20 chair, who recommended Mayeaux for the Junior Faculty Award for=20 Professional Excellence.

Mayeaux = has=20 established an active research program and laboratory facility in = his=20 short time at St. Bonaventure. He regularly involves = undergraduates as=20 collaborators in his research work. He has also co-written several = grant=20 proposals, two of which were funded for a total of = $200,000.

In the = classroom,=20 Mayeaux sets high, but achievable, standards and provides students = with=20 the knowledge and guidance to reach those goals. He dedicates = hours each=20 week to working one-on-one with students outside of the=20 classroom.

Mayeaux = has=20 mentored five students in honors projects, said Dr. Joel H. = Benington,=20 professor of biology, who also nominated Mayeaux for the award.=20 =93Considering that fewer than 100 students have graduated with = honors from=20 the entire University during Dr. Mayeaux=92s time here, this is a = remarkable=20 record,=94 said Benington.

Added = Valeri,=20 =93Students regard Dr. Mayeaux as knowledgeable, flexible in his = approach to=20 teaching, clear, considerate, concerned, and available for help. = He is an=20 asset not only to the Department of Psychology, but to the St. = Bonaventure=20 community as a whole.=94

Dr. = Patrick=20 Panzarella has been a faculty member of the Department of English = at St.=20 Bonaventure University for 43 years. =93His record of service over = that=20 period makes a long catalog,=94 said Dr. Jeffrey White, chair of = the=20 Department of Classical Languages, who presented Dr. Panzarella at = the=20 awards luncheon.

Panzarella=92s=20 record is =93crammed with examples more than sufficient to = represent the=20 singular unselfishness of his work on behalf of his students and = his=20 colleagues at St. Bonaventure,=94 said White.

Panzarella served=20 on the Faculty Senate for more than 15 years, was director of = freshman=20 composition for 30 years, and was a member of the Alumni Reunion = Committee=20 for 26 years. He was a member of the Campus Ministry Council, was = on=20 several dean search committees, and was a member of many = University and=20 Department of Athletics committees and councils.

He = founded the=20 St. Bonaventure Study in Italy Program and has been director of = the Summer=20 Study in Italy Program since 2003. =93This program serves to place = undergraduate students, intellectually and socially, into the most = authentic environment of Franciscanism worldwide, and it gives St. = Bonaventure an international presence and prestige,=94 said=20 White.

Panzarella was=20 the men=92s tennis team coach for 30 years, and for 21 years = coached the=20 women=92s tennis team, which he founded. He was inducted into the = St.=20 Bonaventure University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003.

Panzarella=20 graduated from St. Mary=92s College of California in 1964, earned = his=20 master=92s at the University of Rhode Island in 1965, and his = Ph.D. from the=20 State University of New York at Buffalo in 1977.

Six = receive=20 commissioning at U.S. Army ROTC = ceremony

The St.=20 Bonaventure University U.S. Army ROTC program hosted its 2008=20 Commissioning Ceremony on Saturday, May 10, for six new second = lieutenants=20 going into the U.S. Army.

The = guest speaker=20 for the ceremony, held in The Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts, = was=20 Rear Adm. Fr. Louis V. Iasiello, O.F.M. (Ret.), president of = Washington=20 Theological Union.

Fr. = Louis is a=20 1972 graduate
of St. Bonaventure and a member of the University = Board=20 of Trustees.

He = is the=20 former chief of chaplains for the 2,400 active and reserve = chaplains and=20 religious program specialists serving the Navy, Marine Corps, = Coast Guard=20 and Maritime Administration. Immediately after the ceremony, the = new=20 second lieutenants participated in the silver dollar salute, a = tradition=20 in which each hands a shiny silver dollar to the first soldier who = salutes=20 him or her. Those commissioned include:

- Benjamin = Charles=20 Hess Christian, a political science major from Long Valley, N.J. = Christian=20 enrolled in the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) as a = freshman,=20 receiving a four-year scholarship at St. Bonaventure University. = He is a=20 graduate of the United States Army=92s Airborne School. Upon = completion of=20 the Leadership Development and Assessment Course, he was selected = for=20 commissioning as a military intelligence officer with a branch = detail in=20 Infantry. As an ROTC cadet, he has served as the Battalion S-3 and = as=20 Bravo Company Commander. Christian is the son of Worth and = Mariellen=20 Christian.

- Noelle Louise Helgeson, a sociology major from = Brockway, Pa. Helgeson enrolled in ROTC as a junior, attended = leadership=20 training camp and received a two-year advanced designee = scholarship at St.=20 Bonaventure University. Upon completion of the Leadership = Development and=20 Assessment Course, she was selected for commissioning as an = adjutant=20 general in the National Guard. As an ROTC cadet, she has served as = the=20 Bravo Company Commander and the Alpha Company Executive Officer. = Helgeson=20 is the daughter of John and Nancy Helgeson.

- Jared L. = Kausner, a=20 history major with a minor in political science, from Portville. = He=20 enrolled in ROTC as a freshman and received a three-year New York = National=20 Guard Scholarship at St. Bonaventure University. Kausner is a = graduate of=20 the United States Army=92s Airborne School and Air Assault School. = Upon=20 completion of the Leadership Development and Assessment Course, he = was=20 selected to branch Armor and will serve with B Troop, 2-101 = Cavalry of the=20 New York Army National Guard. As a ROTC cadet, he has served as = the=20 Battalion Commander and the Alpha Company Commander. He is the son = of=20 Thomas and Cheryl Kausner.

- William S. Maloney, a history = major=20 from Fairfax Station, Va. He enrolled in ROTC as a freshman and = received a=20 three-year advanced designee scholarship at St. Bonaventure = University.=20 Maloney is a graduate of the United States Army=92s Airborne = School and the=20 Army Mountain Warfare School. Upon completion of the Leadership=20 Development and Assessment Course, he was selected for = commissioning as a=20 field artillery officer. As an ROTC cadet, he has served as the = Battalion=20 Executive Officer and the Battalion S3. Maloney is the son of = Patrick and=20 Victoria Maloney.

- Ashley Manocchio, a social science = major from=20 Clarence. She enrolled in ROTC as a freshman and attended the = Leadership=20 Training Camp where she received a two-year scholarship, as a = junior, at=20 St. Bonaventure University. Upon completion of the Leadership = Development=20 and Assessment Course, Manocchio was selected for commissioning as = an=20 aviation officer. As an ROTC Cadet, she has served as the Alpha = Company=20 Commander and the Battalion Executive Officer. She is the daughter = of=20 Dario and Mary Lou Manocchio.

- Robert L. = Rapone II, an=20 honors graduate in political science from Waynesville, Mo. He = enrolled in=20 ROTC as a freshman, receiving a four-year scholarship at St. = Bonaventure=20 University. He is a graduate of the United States Army=92s = Airborne School.=20 Upon completion of the Leadership Development and Assessment = Course,=20 Rapone was selected for commissioning as a Military Police = officer. As an=20 ROTC Cadet, he has served as the Battalion Commander and the = Battalion S-2=20 and S-5. He is the son of Susan and Col. Joseph Rapone=20 (Ret.).

Herzig, Novak named = Ideal=20 Bonaventure Students

St. = Bonaventure=20 University seniors Stephanie Herzig and Christopher Novak were = recognized=20 as Ideal Bonaventure Students on Saturday, May 10, during the = University=92s=20 Honors Luncheon, and again Sunday during its 148th Commencement=20 Exercises.

The Ideal = Bonaventure=20 Students, who are selected by a committee that receives = nominations from=20 the University community, are recognized as exemplifying the = spirit of St.=20 Bonaventure and the ideals of St. Francis through community = service and=20 academic excellence.

The = honorable=20 mentions were Katherine Rogers of Almond, N.Y., and Randy Moley of = Depew,=20 N.Y.

Herzig, = daughter of=20 David and Sharon Herzig of Elmira, is an elementary and special = education=20 major and history minor. A dean=92s list student, she is a member = of Kappa=20 Delta Pi, an international education honor society.

Traveling = was a=20 consistent aspect of Herzig=92s education at St. = Bonaventure.

She was a = member of=20 BonaResponds and spent service time in 2006 helping clean up the = Gulf=20 Coast struck by Hurricane Katrina. During the summer of 2006, she = attended=20 two classes with the University=92s Francis E. Kelley Oxford = Program in=20 England. Last summer, Herzig was accepted into the Summer in the = City=20 program, which allowed her to teach inner-city students for six = weeks in=20 New York City. And this spring, Herzig embraced a seven-week = student=20 teaching internship on Grand Bahama Island.

Her = extracurricular=20 activities included serving as a Student Ambassador, a First-Year=20 Experience Mentor, and a Peer Mentor in a University 101 course, = where she=20 assisted in instruction. She has served on a First-Year Experience = committee designing new experiences for freshmen and was a leader = of the=20 Freshman Hall Council. She has also served on the University=92s = Judicial=20 Board.

As a member = of=20 Students in Free Enterprise, Herzig has spent Friday afternoons = teaching=20 business and marketing skills, ethics and entrepreneurship to = students in=20 an enrichment class at a local elementary school.

She also = served as a=20 Challenge 24 Competition Leader, has been active with Students for = the=20 Mountain.

Following = graduation,=20 Herzing plans to pursue a master=92s of education degree in = Advanced=20 Inclusive Processes at St. Bonaventure, where she has accepted a = graduate=20 assistantship in the First-Year Experience program.

Novak, son = of John=20 and Filomena Novak of Orangeburg, N.Y., is a dean=92s list student = who=20 enjoys the respect of faculty, staff and peers. He will earn a = degree in=20 journalism and mass communication with a minor in English. His = Bonaventure=20 experience has been partially sponsored by a Friars=92 Scholarship = and the=20 Thomas Mosser Public Relations Scholarship.

On campus, = he has=20 worked for the student-run newspaper, The Bona Venture (serving as = associate editor in 2007-08), the student-run radio station, The = Buzz, and=20 the Teaching and Learning Center.

Off campus, = he has=20 worked for the Rockland County Times and as a stringer for The = Associated=20 Press, covering St. Bonaventure men=92s home basketball = games.

As vice = president of=20 the junior class during the 2006-07 academic year, Novak regularly = participated in Student Government Association meetings, and = planned=20 junior class social and philanthropic activities.

Novak has = been=20 involved with Mt. Irenaeus since he joined the St. Bonaventure = family in=20 2004. With his unassuming, sincere manner, Novak has affected = countless=20 peers and has organized Men=92s Overnights at the Mountain as well = as=20 traveled with friars in Bona=92s On The Road ministry outreaches = to alumni=20 and friends.

Following = graduation,=20 Novak plans to pursue a master=92s degree in Adolescence Education = at St.=20 Bonaventure, where he has accepted a graduate assistantship in the = Teaching and Learning Center.

Delta president tells grads that lessons = learned at=20 SBU helped his career take off

Researching the = University=92s=20 mission statement in preparation for his Commencement address, = Edward=20 Bastian realized that the foundation for his success as a business = leader=20 was poured 30 years ago at St. Bonaventure.

=93The = values that I=20 learned here are what it took to save Delta Air Lines,=94 Bastian, = SBU class=20 of 1979 and the president and CFO of Delta, told St. = Bonaventure=92s 148th=20 graduating class Sunday morning at the Reilly Center = Arena.

Bastian was = instrumental in developing the business plan that led Delta from=20 bankruptcy three years ago to its status today, if a merger with = Northwest=20 is approved, as the world=92s largest air carrier.

Bastian, = who received=20 an honorary doctorate, said the University=92s core values of = discovery,=20 community and individual worth were the values that Delta = executives=20 embraced in the painful restructuring of the company.

=93We made = it a=20 priority to make our people part of the solution,=94 Bastian said. = =93We=20 brought 40,000 Delta employees to Atlanta, 400 people at a time, = to=20 apologize to them for past mistakes=94 and to let them know how = much=20 management valued their service.

=93It was = servant=20 leadership, and they responded,=94 he said. =93We had lost our way = as a=20 company, but found it just in time.=94

Bastian = stressed to=20 the graduates that =93service to others is the most rewarding = thing you can=20 do =97 for your world, and for our world.=94

More than = 700 St.=20 Bonaventure students =97 465 undergraduates and 272 graduate = students =97 who=20 have completed their undergraduate or graduate studies since = August 2007=20 were recognized during Commencement Exercises, which also = celebrated the=20 University=92s 150th anniversary. Graduates wore bronze medallions = that most=20 of them received April 1 at the Anniversary = Convocation.
