      Bonaventure chapter of Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) won the =
regional=20
      championship at a recent competition in New York City and the =
students are=20
      now setting their sights on nationals.</FONT></P>

regional=20
      competition was held Friday, April 4, at the Westchester Marriott. =
St.=20
      Bonaventure competed against 12 other college SIFE =
teams.</FONT></P>

sans-serif"><BR>=93It=92s great to=20
      win, but what=92s more important is the service we perform,=94 =
said Dr. Todd=20
      Palmer, SBU SIFE adviser. =93An example would be our blood drive. =
We raised=20

      international organization that mobilizes university students =

      world to make a difference in their communities while developing =

      national exposition will be held May 13 through 15 in =
Chicago.</FONT></P>

      the SIFE regional competition is great for our team in that we now =

      the opportunity to go to the national competition in Chicago which =

      escalates us to a different level of competition,=94 said student =

because we=20
      are exposed to many other competitive teams, great networking =
events and=20
      career building opportunities.=94</FONT></P>

year, SIFE=20
      put forth close to 10,000 hours in service activity on both local =
and=20
      international projects. Some of its key projects =
included:</FONT></P>

Community Blood=20
      Bank Social Entrepreneurship Challenge. Members worked with local =
high=20
      schools to run their own blood drives. Each school was given a =
real=20
      marketing budget and placed ads in local media. Close to 300 units =
of=20
      blood were donated, a 35 percent increase from conventional =
methods. These=20
      schools will have a final marketing competition on April 22.<BR>- =
The=20
      Wooly Willy Creativity Contest. Members taught creativity and =
marketing=20
      lessons to 150 sixth graders who were then given the opportunity =
to design=20
      their own toy for Smethport Toys. The winners had their toy =
manufactured=20
      by the company.<BR>- The Bahamas Entrepreneurial Service Trip. =
SIFE runs=20
      one of the largest service trips in the world and its own economic =

      development zone in the Bahamas. Fifty-five St. Bonaventure =
students spent=20
      10 days on the island of Grand Bahama working with nearly 2,000 =
elementary=20
      and high school students. These students were taught a series of =
lessons=20
      in entrepreneurship and economic development. Students also held =
computer=20
      classes for adults. SIFE members helped to fund the painting of =
the=20
      Freeport YMCA, which was damaged by two hurricanes, and built a =
library at=20
      a primary school that had no books. St. Bonaventure SIFE members =
gathered=20
      2,000 books for the school.<BR></FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">=93It feels =
great to be=20
      recognized at competition for all the hard work SBU SIFE members =
have put=20
      in over the past years,=94 Pohlman said. =93Our members have =
developed and=20
      implemented impressive projects that in the past years have ranked =
us in=20
      the top 40 SIFE teams (out of approximately 850) in the United =
States and=20
      hopefully this year we will do just as well if not better at=20
      nationals.=94</FONT></P>

      President Sr. Margaret Carney, O.S.F., S.T.D., and Franciscan =

      Professor Dr. Jean-Fran=E7ois Godet-Calogeras were pivotal figures =

      helping the Third Order Regular (TOR) Franciscans rewrite their =
Rule of=20
      Life, first approved in the 13th century but not modified since=20
      1927.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><BR>They =
beam at the=20
      thought of once again seeing so many people who lent their voices =
to the=20
      painstaking evolutionary process more than two decades ago. All =
but one of=20
      the congregations attending are from the United States; the other =
is from=20
      Canada.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><BR>=93For =
me, it=92s=20
      going to be a fabulous family reunion,=94 said Sr. Margaret, a=20
      self-described nobody in Franciscan scholarship when she was asked =
to=20
      represent North American TOR sisters at two 10-day work groups in =
Germany=20
      (September 1980) and Belgium (May 1981).</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, =
sans-serif"><BR></FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Their =
mission, set=20
      forth to all Catholic congregations at the close of the Second =
Vatican=20
      Council in the Decree on Renewal of Religious Life, was to =
re-examine=20
      their Rule of Life to rediscover the true spirit and aim of their =
founder;=20
      in this case, Francis of Assisi.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">But why was =
Sr.=20
      Margaret chosen?</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, =
sans-serif"><BR>=93Because I had=20
      six credits to my name in the Franciscan Institute, that=92s =
why,=94 she said=20
      with a laugh. =93I gave up an important job in the Diocese of =
Pittsburgh to=20
      come here (in the late 1970s) to study, to learn more about the =
Third=20
      Order and its history. I was already trying to understand all this =

      stuff.=94</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><BR>Since =
most of=20
      Franciscan history =93focused on the First Order (Friars Minor), =
and was=20
      viewed through their perspective, very little was known about the =
history=20
      of the Third Order,=94 said Godet-Calogeras, who left the Order of =
Friars=20
      Minor in 1986, but never lost his Franciscan spirit or passion for =

      Franciscan scholarship.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><BR>Sr. =
Margaret=92s=20
      keen interest in learning all she could about Third Order history =
led to=20
      her nomination to represent North American sisters at the TOR Rule =

      meetings. (She eventually developed a Franciscan Institute course =
on TOR=20
      history because none existed.)</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, =
sans-serif"><BR>=93Roland Faley=20
      always told me, =91Margaret, in the land of the blind, the =
one-eyed woman is=20
      queen,=92=94 Sr. Margaret said.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><BR>Faley, =
a TOR=20
      friar, is the keynote speaker at this weekend=92s Festival of the =
25th=20
      Anniversary of the TOR Rule.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><BR>Faley =
began=20
      conversations as early as 1973 with Fr. Thaddeus Horgan, S.A., to =
discuss=20
      revising the TOR Rule, which hadn=92t been altered since 1927. It =
wasn=92t=20
      decided until early 1980 that the revised Rule of Life would be =
shared by=20
      both sisters and brothers of the Third Order. (Poor Clares make up =
the=20
      Second Order.)</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><BR>What =
the=20
      years-long process leading up to the first work session in Germany =

      revealed was a remarkable ignorance about a religious order more =
than=20
      seven centuries old.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><BR>=93Some =

      congregations were so centered on themselves that they often never =

      realized the existence of other congregations,=94 Sr. Margaret =
said. =93As we=20
      wrote the Rule, we began to develop a much more complete sense of =
our=20
      history. ... We began to develop a really good Rolodex of who we =
are and=20
      where we=92ve been.=94</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><BR>Between =
1969 and=20
      1973, French, Dutch, German and American congregations developed =
projects=20
      to modify =97 independent of each other =97 the Rule of 1927 to =
adhere more=20
      closely to their own expression of Franciscan life. Together with =
the=20
      Madrid Statement of 1974, which sought to strengthen the bond =
between TOR=20
      friars and sisters, these separate Rules served as building blocks =
for the=20
      unifying efforts of 1980-81.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><BR>The =
first 10-day=20
      work session in Reute, Germany, was =85 well, pick an adjective: =
grueling,=20
      contentious, confusing, exhausting and, in the end, unfulfilling.=20
      Representatives from Italy, France, Germany, Brazil, Colombia, =
India and=20
      the United States made communication a challenge. French served as =
the=20
      spoken word of the work group, Latin the written word.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><BR>Four =
First Order=20
      friars, including Godet-Calogeras, served as experts, responsible =
for the=20
      methodology of the group and helping to facilitate the=20
      communication.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><BR>=93We =
thought we=20
      had failed after that first meeting,=94 Sr. Margaret said. =93The =
days were=20
      very long, 20 hours some days, and the group began to fragment as =
we went=20
      along. But we eventually realized that we had achieved enough to =
be a=20
      stepping stone.=94</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><BR>Sr. =
Margaret and=20
      Fr. Thaddeus shared the TOR Rule draft with their superiors in the =
U.S.,=20
      stressing the need for more research and education for their=20
      congregational members to help them understand the writings of =
Francis,=20
      and the distinct identity, charism and history of the TOR and its =
previous=20
      Rules.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><BR>Third =
Order=20
      religious in the U.S., many of whom will attend this weekend=92s =
festival,=20
      were allowed to comment on and critique the draft of the Rule, as =
were all=20
      TOR members worldwide. The American input helped sway opinion and =
build=20
      cooperative bridges at the second 10-day session in Brussels eight =
months=20
      later.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><BR>=93The =
stakes were=20
      high,=94 Sr. Margaret said. =93I had to answer to my superiors at =
home, and=20
      yet I had to compromise like everyone else. The experience of the =
first=20
      session really made us focus on working together.=94</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><BR>The =
Brussels=20
      draft was written almost entirely in the words of Francis and was =
a=20
      radical departure from all past TOR Rules. Its intent was to give =
Francis=92=20
      proposal for TOR life =96 a life of total and continuous =
conversion to God=20
      through literal living of the Gospel.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><BR>In =
March 1982,=20
