Delta president to speak at=20 Commencement

Edward Bastian, president and chief = financial=20 officer of Delta Air Lines, will be the keynote speaker at St. = Bonaventure=20 University=92s 148th Commencement Exercises on Sunday, May=20 11.

Bastian, a = 1979 St.=20 Bonaventure graduate, will be one of three people receiving = honorary=20 degrees, along with Monsignor William H. Shannon, professor = emeritus at=20 Nazareth College in Rochester, and Sr. Maureen Avril Chin Fatt, = O.S.F.,=20 Congregational Minister of the Franciscan Sisters of = Allegany.

Commencement Weekend=20 will include a Candlelight Ceremony at 8:45 p.m. Friday, May 9, = and a=20 Baccalaureate Mass at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, May 10. Commencement = Exercises,=20 which will also recognize St. Bonaventure=92s 150th anniversary, = will begin=20 at 10:30 a.m. May 11 in the Reilly Center Arena.

Ed Bastian = joined=20 Delta in 1998 as vice president of finance and controller and is = credited=20 with leading Delta through its recent Chapter 11 restructuring = process.=20 Just this week, Delta and Northwest announced merger plans that = would make=20 the airline the world=92s biggest air carrier. The combined = airline will be=20 called Delta, and Bastian will remain in both = positions.

The = business plan=20 Bastian helped develop to rescue Delta included $3 billion in = annual=20 financial improvements and gained strong support from the = company=92s=20 creditors and employees. The plan also included what the airline = deems to=20 be an innovative compensation program for Delta employees = including stock,=20 cash payouts and pay increases.

=93To be = the president=20 of a company as large as Delta, and be so respected down through = the ranks=20 during such difficult economic times, says a lot about Ed and the = culture=20 he=92s helped to redefine at Delta,=94 said Sr. Margaret Carney, = O.S.F.,=20 University president. =93I=92d like to think a little bit of that = workplace=20 creativity and compassion rubbed off on him during his time at St. = Bonaventure.=94

Bastian = briefly left=20 Delta in early 2005 to become senior vice president and CFO of = Acuity=20 Brands, but he quickly returned to the airline in July 2005 as = CFO, and=20 was promoted to president in August 2007.

Before = joining Delta,=20 Bastian had worked for PepsiCo, where he served as vice president = of=20 finance for Pepsi Cola International. While at Pepsi he had also = served as=20 vice president of business processes re-engineering for the = Frito-Lay=20 operation and vice president, finance and controller, for = Frito-Lay=20 International.

Prior to = joining=20 PepsiCo, Bastian was a partner in the New York audit practice of = Price=20 Waterhouse. He specialized in the entertainment, advertising and=20 manufacturing sectors, and also served as the strategic planning = partner=20 for Price Waterhouse=92s New York Region.

Bastian = serves on the=20 International Board of Directors of Habitat for Humanity and the = Woodruff=20 Arts Center in Atlanta. He lives in Atlanta with his wife, Anna, = and their=20 four children.

Monsignor = Shannon,=20 who won=92t be able to attend due to health concerns, is the = founding=20 president of the International Thomas Merton Society, and was the = general=20 editor of the Thomas Merton Letters and the Thomas Merton = Encyclopedia. He=20 is author of the acclaimed Merton biography =93Silent Lamp,=94 as = well as a=20 number of books on spirituality.

Merton was = one of the=20 most influential Catholic authors of the 20th century. He taught = English=20 at St. Bonaventure in 1940 and 1941 before becoming a Trappist = monk. The=20 Merton Archive at St. Bonaventure is one of the most important=20 repositories of Merton materials worldwide.

Lisa = Biedenbach, SBU=20 class of 1976, will accept the degree on behalf of Monsignor = Shannon. She=20 is an editorial director at St. Anthony Messenger Press and a = close friend=20 of Monsignor Shannon=92s.

Sr. Avril = was=20 unanimously elected in 2004 as the first non-American = Congregational=20 Minister of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany.

The eldest = of six=20 children, born in Jamaica to Chinese parents, Sr. Avril graduated = with a=20 degree in elementary education from St. Bonaventure, and earned = her=20 master=92s degree in mathematics education from Boston = College.

She = returned to=20 Jamaica after her graduate work and was a teacher and = administrator at St.=20 Joseph=92s Teachers College in Kingston for more than 30 years. = She served=20 on several school boards and was a member of the Joint Board of = Teacher=20 Education in Jamaica.

Since 1980, = she has=20 held several elected positions in the Congregation, including Area = Coordinator of the Jamaica Region, Regional Minister, and member = of the=20 General Council before being elected Congregational Minister four = years=20 ago.

=93She has = brought to=20 all these leadership positions great insights of our Franciscan = culture,=20 heritage and tradition, as well as an outstanding ability to = synthesize=20 and dialogue in areas pertinent to religious life and society,=94 = said Sr.=20 Margaret.

SIFE wins regional = championship -=20 next stop is nationals

The St.=20 Bonaventure chapter of Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) won the = regional=20 championship at a recent competition in New York City and the = students are=20 now setting their sights on nationals.

The = regional=20 competition was held Friday, April 4, at the Westchester Marriott. = St.=20 Bonaventure competed against 12 other college SIFE = teams.

=93It=92s great to=20 win, but what=92s more important is the service we perform,=94 = said Dr. Todd=20 Palmer, SBU SIFE adviser. =93An example would be our blood drive. = We raised=20 300 units. That=92s the number that really counts.=94

SIFE is = an=20 international organization that mobilizes university students = around the=20 world to make a difference in their communities while developing = the=20 skills to become socially responsible business leaders.

It is = the largest=20 student service organization on campus, with more than 70 members. = The SBU=20 SIFE team ranks in the top 5 percent of SIFE teams = nationwide.

The = SIFE regional=20 competitions are the first events in the competition process. = Every SIFE=20 team is invited to attend the regional competition of its choice. = Regional=20 champions then head to the SIFE USA National Exposition. This = year=92s=20 national exposition will be held May 13 through 15 in = Chicago.

=93Doing well in=20 the SIFE regional competition is great for our team in that we now = have=20 the opportunity to go to the national competition in Chicago which = escalates us to a different level of competition,=94 said student = Lindsey=20 Pohlman, vice president of SBU SIFE. =93It is a great experience = because we=20 are exposed to many other competitive teams, great networking = events and=20 career building opportunities.=94

This = year, SIFE=20 put forth close to 10,000 hours in service activity on both local = and=20 international projects. Some of its key projects = included:

- A = Community Blood=20 Bank Social Entrepreneurship Challenge. Members worked with local = high=20 schools to run their own blood drives. Each school was given a = real=20 marketing budget and placed ads in local media. Close to 300 units = of=20 blood were donated, a 35 percent increase from conventional = methods. These=20 schools will have a final marketing competition on April 22.
- = The=20 Wooly Willy Creativity Contest. Members taught creativity and = marketing=20 lessons to 150 sixth graders who were then given the opportunity = to design=20 their own toy for Smethport Toys. The winners had their toy = manufactured=20 by the company.
- The Bahamas Entrepreneurial Service Trip. = SIFE runs=20 one of the largest service trips in the world and its own economic = development zone in the Bahamas. Fifty-five St. Bonaventure = students spent=20 10 days on the island of Grand Bahama working with nearly 2,000 = elementary=20 and high school students. These students were taught a series of = lessons=20 in entrepreneurship and economic development. Students also held = computer=20 classes for adults. SIFE members helped to fund the painting of = the=20 Freeport YMCA, which was damaged by two hurricanes, and built a = library at=20 a primary school that had no books. St. Bonaventure SIFE members = gathered=20 2,000 books for the school.

=93It feels = great to be=20 recognized at competition for all the hard work SBU SIFE members = have put=20 in over the past years,=94 Pohlman said. =93Our members have = developed and=20 implemented impressive projects that in the past years have ranked = us in=20 the top 40 SIFE teams (out of approximately 850) in the United = States and=20 hopefully this year we will do just as well if not better at=20 nationals.=94

Sr. Margaret Carney = elected to=20 ACCU Board of Directors

Sr.=20 Margaret Carney, O.S.F., S.T.D., St. Bonaventure University = president, has=20 begun a three-year term on the Association of Catholic Colleges = and=20 Universities Board of Directors.

The = ACCU is a=20 voluntary association founded in 1899 by 53 delegates from = Catholic=20 colleges throughout the United States. Its principal purposes are = to help=20 its members enhance and strengthen their stated Catholic mission = and to=20 foster participation among Catholic colleges and = universities.

=93The = ACCU plays a=20 significant role in continually helping Catholic institutions = define and=20 refine their mission-oriented goals,=94 Sr. Margaret said. = =93I=92m honored to=20 serve on the board, and to contribute to the collaborative effort = that=20 benefits almost every Catholic college in the U.S.=94

Through = research,=20 publications, conferences, consultations, special programs and its = relationship with other agencies, ACCU encourages and facilitates = the=20 sharing of ideas and collaborative efforts among its member=20 institutions.

Since = it began,=20 the ACCU has grown to represent more than 90 percent of accredited = Catholic institutions of higher learning in the U.S., as well as=20 approximately two dozen international universities.

The = major project=20 this year for the Board of Directors and ACCU=92s staff is the = drafting of a=20 document tentatively titled Catholic Higher Education in the = American=20 Context, which will cover a myriad of topics including, but not = limited=20 to: the value of diversity within Catholic higher education, = linking=20 academic freedom to academic responsibility, linking liberal arts=20 traditions to Catholic intellectual and social teachings, and = relating=20 Catholic higher education in U.S. context to a global frame of=20 reference.

Sr. = Margaret also=20 serves on the board of the Council of Independent Colleges of New = York and=20 the Association of Franciscan Colleges and Universities. She is a = member=20 of the Atlantic 10 Conference=92s Council of Presidents and serves = on the=20 Secretariat for the Franciscan Intellectual Tradition.

Autism expert to speak at SBU April=20 24

leading researcher = on autism=20 and childhood behavioral disorders will share his knowledge with = St.=20 Bonaventure University and surrounding communities on April = 24.

Dr. Phillip = Strain,=20 professor of educational psychology and director of the Positive = Early=20 Learning Experiences Center at the University of Colorado at = Denver and=20 Health Sciences Center, will host a one-day workshop on these = topics at=20 St. Bonaventure.

This = workshop will be=20 held from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Rigas Family Theater at the = Regina A.=20 Quick Center for the Arts. An informal reception before the = workshop will=20 start at 3 p.m.

Dr. Barbara = Trolley,=20 associate professor of counselor education and chair of the = Disability=20 Committee at St. Bonaventure, developed the workshop in an effort = to=20 provide more education to the university and community in the area = of=20 autism spectrum disorders (ASD).

=93Statistics indicate=20 that such disorders are on the rise, with reports that autism is = the=20 fastest growing developmental disability, affecting 1 million to = 1.5=20 million children,=94 Trolley said. =93Additionally, if one = considers the=20 statistic that every 20 minutes a child is diagnosed with ASD, and = that=20 more children are included in the classroom, it is essential that = school=20 and agency professionals and parents be educated as to the nature = of ASD=20 in order to best assist these children.=94

Strain, the = co-principal investigator for the Center for Evidenced Based = Practice:=20 Young Children with Challenging Behavior, will present on the = topic=20 =93Quality Inclusion for Young Children with Autism: An Overview = of LEAP=20 Preschool.=94

LEAP stands = for=20 Learning Experiences: Alternative Program for preschoolers and = parents. It=20 was founded by Strain, who received a three-year federal grant to = create a=20 model program that placed autistic children in a classroom with = those who=20 do not have autism. It is one of eight empirically validated = programs=20 recognized by the National Academies of Science across the U.S. = used by=20 approximately 100 classrooms in 20 states now.

The = workshop will=20 focus on the development of social skills in children identified = with=20 autism spectrum disorder, teaching strategies for special needs = students,=20 better undertanding Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) as well = as=20 positive ways to respond to children=92s behavior at home and = within the=20 classroom.

=93This = workshop will=20 not only provide cutting edge knowledge for education students as = they=20 work for families, but also pertinent and practical information = for=20 parents, teachers and administrators in the community,=94 Trolley=20 said.

=93The big = message you=20 will receive is that if you really want to change the social = skills and=20 social relationships that young children with autism have, you = have to=20 start early and intensively in the classroom as well as at = home,=94 Strain=20 said.

Strain=92s = work has=20 been published in more than 200 professional papers and = intervention=20 manuals that have been translated for use throughout Europe, Asia, = and=20 South America. He has been the principal investigator for dozens = of=20 federal and state grants totaling more than $34 million. He is = currently=20 involved in the research and implementation of two evidence-based = models:=20 Technical Assistance Center on Social Emotional Intervention for = Young=20 Children and Center on Social and Emotional Foundations for Early=20 Learning. He is on the editorial board of 10 journals and is a = grant=20 reviewer for NIH and the U.S. Department of Education and has been = a=20 consultant on early intervention practices to the Federal = Interagency=20 Coordinating Council in five countries. Strain is the recipient of = career=20 achievement awards from the Division for Early Childhood and the = Teacher=20 Education Division of the Council for Exceptional = Children.

Darwin = L. King,=20 professor of accounting, was presented with the Allied Academies=20 =93Outstanding Educator Award=94 at its spring International = Conference. The=20 Academy of Educational Leadership, one of Allied=92s = organizational=20 divisions, was the provider of the honor. Just = off the=20 press is another volume of the renowned Bonaventure Texts in = Translation=20 Series (BTTS) from Franciscan Institute Publications! The latest = volume,=20 the 13th in the series, presenting Bonaventure's Disputed = Questions on=20 Evangelical Perfection, is available for the first time in an = English=20 published format. The work was co-translated by Thomas Reist, = O.F.M.=20 Conv., and our own Fr. Robert J. Karris, O.F.M. of the Franciscan=20 Institute. This volume represents the fourth text of Bonaventure = that Fr.=20 Bob has translated in this series of which he is now also General = Editor.=20 The former editor, Fr. Zachary Hayes, O.F.M., also just released = his own=20 translated volume - the 14th in the series: The Collations on the = Seven=20 Gifts of the Holy Spirit. More than 230 Franciscans = representing 45=20 different congregations will gather at St. Bonaventure University = this=20 weekend to commemorate a moment 25 years ago that helped Third = Order=20 Franciscans worldwide reconnect with their faith and = tradition.

St. = Bonaventure=20 President Sr. Margaret Carney, O.S.F., S.T.D., and Franciscan = studies=20 Professor Dr. Jean-Fran=E7ois Godet-Calogeras were pivotal figures = in=20 helping the Third Order Regular (TOR) Franciscans rewrite their = Rule of=20 Life, first approved in the 13th century but not modified since=20 1927.

They = beam at the=20 thought of once again seeing so many people who lent their voices = to the=20 painstaking evolutionary process more than two decades ago. All = but one of=20 the congregations attending are from the United States; the other = is from=20 Canada.

=93For = me, it=92s=20 going to be a fabulous family reunion,=94 said Sr. Margaret, a=20 self-described nobody in Franciscan scholarship when she was asked = to=20 represent North American TOR sisters at two 10-day work groups in = Germany=20 (September 1980) and Belgium (May 1981).

Their = mission, set=20 forth to all Catholic congregations at the close of the Second = Vatican=20 Council in the Decree on Renewal of Religious Life, was to = re-examine=20 their Rule of Life to rediscover the true spirit and aim of their = founder;=20 in this case, Francis of Assisi.

But why was = Sr.=20 Margaret chosen?

=93Because I had=20 six credits to my name in the Franciscan Institute, that=92s = why,=94 she said=20 with a laugh. =93I gave up an important job in the Diocese of = Pittsburgh to=20 come here (in the late 1970s) to study, to learn more about the = Third=20 Order and its history. I was already trying to understand all this = stuff.=94

Since = most of=20 Franciscan history =93focused on the First Order (Friars Minor), = and was=20 viewed through their perspective, very little was known about the = history=20 of the Third Order,=94 said Godet-Calogeras, who left the Order of = Friars=20 Minor in 1986, but never lost his Franciscan spirit or passion for = Franciscan scholarship.

Sr. = Margaret=92s=20 keen interest in learning all she could about Third Order history = led to=20 her nomination to represent North American sisters at the TOR Rule = meetings. (She eventually developed a Franciscan Institute course = on TOR=20 history because none existed.)

=93Roland Faley=20 always told me, =91Margaret, in the land of the blind, the = one-eyed woman is=20 queen,=92=94 Sr. Margaret said.

Faley, = a TOR=20 friar, is the keynote speaker at this weekend=92s Festival of the = 25th=20 Anniversary of the TOR Rule.

Faley = began=20 conversations as early as 1973 with Fr. Thaddeus Horgan, S.A., to = discuss=20 revising the TOR Rule, which hadn=92t been altered since 1927. It = wasn=92t=20 decided until early 1980 that the revised Rule of Life would be = shared by=20 both sisters and brothers of the Third Order. (Poor Clares make up = the=20 Second Order.)

What = the=20 years-long process leading up to the first work session in Germany = revealed was a remarkable ignorance about a religious order more = than=20 seven centuries old.

=93Some = congregations were so centered on themselves that they often never = realized the existence of other congregations,=94 Sr. Margaret = said. =93As we=20 wrote the Rule, we began to develop a much more complete sense of = our=20 history. ... We began to develop a really good Rolodex of who we = are and=20 where we=92ve been.=94

Between = 1969 and=20 1973, French, Dutch, German and American congregations developed = projects=20 to modify =97 independent of each other =97 the Rule of 1927 to = adhere more=20 closely to their own expression of Franciscan life. Together with = the=20 Madrid Statement of 1974, which sought to strengthen the bond = between TOR=20 friars and sisters, these separate Rules served as building blocks = for the=20 unifying efforts of 1980-81.

Four = First Order=20 friars, including Godet-Calogeras, served as experts, responsible = for the=20 methodology of the group and helping to facilitate the=20 communication.

=93We = thought we=20 had failed after that first meeting,=94 Sr. Margaret said. =93The = days were=20 very long, 20 hours some days, and the group began to fragment as = we went=20 along. But we eventually realized that we had achieved enough to = be a=20 stepping stone.=94

Sr. = Margaret and=20 Fr. Thaddeus shared the TOR Rule draft with their superiors in the = U.S.,=20 stressing the need for more research and education for their=20 congregational members to help them understand the writings of = Francis,=20 and the distinct identity, charism and history of the TOR and its = previous=20 Rules.

Third = Order=20 religious in the U.S., many of whom will attend this weekend=92s = festival,=20 were allowed to comment on and critique the draft of the Rule, as = were all=20 TOR members worldwide. The American input helped sway opinion and = build=20 cooperative bridges at the second 10-day session in Brussels eight = months=20 later.

=93The = stakes were=20 high,=94 Sr. Margaret said. =93I had to answer to my superiors at = home, and=20 yet I had to compromise like everyone else. The experience of the = first=20 session really made us focus on working together.=94

The = Brussels=20 draft was written almost entirely in the words of Francis and was = a=20 radical departure from all past TOR Rules. Its intent was to give = Francis=92=20 proposal for TOR life =96 a life of total and continuous = conversion to God=20 through literal living of the Gospel.

In = March 1982,=20 nearly 200 Superior Generals, representing 35 countries and more = than=20 200,000 TOR members, convened in Rome to discuss the Brussels = draft. With=20 only three minor amendments, the draft was approved, = 188-2.

A = letter to TOR=20 brothers and sisters from Pope John Paul II, dated April 30, 1983, = informed them of his approval. The pope wrote:

Twenty-five years=20 later, Sr. Margaret is convinced John Paul=92s sentiments have = been=20 realized.
