Trustee J. Oliver McGonigle honored for = commitment to=20 Catholic schools

University trustee and alumnus J. = Oliver=20 McGonigle has been recognized with the 2008 Catholic Foundation = Award for=20 his dedication, hard work and compassion in serving the greater=20 Dallas/Fort Worth community and the overall Catholic=20 community.

McGonigle=20 received the award Wednesday, Feb. 20, from The Catholic = Foundation, in=20 honor of his commitment to supporting Catholic schools and the = children=20 who benefit from a Catholic education.

In = Dallas,=20 McGonigle has served on the Catholic Foundation Board of Trustees, = the=20 Board of Directors of the local American Red Cross, and as the = president=20 of the school board and chair of the first capital campaign at = Bishop=20 Lynch High School. He co-chairs the board at Bishop Dunne and = helped found=20 the Bishop Dunne 100 Scholarship Dinner, an annual event raising = several=20 hundred thousand dollars for scholarships. McGonigle is also the = founder=20 of Friends of the Missionaries of the Cross Foundation, which = supports the=20 Santa Rosa School in the barrio of Tijuana, Mexico.

From = kindergarten=20 through graduate school, he attended Catholic educational = institutions,=20 including Saint Mary=92s School in his hometown of South Amboy, = N.J., and=20 Saint Benedict=92s Preparatory School in Newark, N.J. In addition = to his=20 bachelor=92s degree in accounting from St. Bonaventure (Class of = 1966), he=20 earned a master=92s in business administration from Seton Hall=20 University.

McGonigle, who=20 led a successful career in the finance industry, retired in 2000 = after 13=20 years as president of the Edwin L. Cox Company. He held previous = posts=20 with SPW Corporation of Dallas, Champlin Petroleum, Union Pacific=20 Corporation and Deloitte & Touche.

McGonigle, of=20 Dallas and San Diego, joined the St. Bonaventure University Board = of=20 Trustees in 1999.

He said = the=20 generous support of The Catholic Foundation has been a =93precious = gift=94 to=20 schools throughout the Diocese.

Chartered in=20 1955, The Catholic Foundation was founded by a group of dedicated = Catholic=20 laymen with a vision that extended far beyond the charitable needs = of the=20 moment. For over 50 years, this independent, nonprofit corporation = has=20 dedicated its resources to compassionate charitable giving through = grants=20 provided by benefactors through its many planned giving=20 programs.

Richard Trietley honored = in=20 Albany

Lt. Col. Richard Trietley Jr., head of St.=20 Bonaventure University=92s ROTC program, was among 19 people = honored Monday=20 by the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities (cIcu) = during=20 the 2008 Independent Sector Alumni Hall of Distinction Awards = Ceremony and=20 Legislative Reception at the state Capitol.

The Alumni = Hall of=20 Distinction was created in 2000 to recognize New York=92s = Independent Sector=20 graduates who make contributions to society through their careers = and=20 community involvement. This year, cIcu recognized courageous = alumni who=20 are either actively serving in the United States military or are=20 veterans.

His liberal = arts=20 education from St. Bonaventure University was instrumental to his = decision=20 to serve in the U.S. Army, said Trietley, a 1986 SBU = graduate.

Trietley, = with a=20 22-year career in the Army, said, =93The Franciscan values of = individual=20 worth and service complemented perfectly the instruction I = received as an=20 undergraduate. I felt prepared from an ethical and moral = perspective to=20 undertake the awesome responsibility of leading American=20 soldiers.=94

During his = time as a=20 U.S. Army infantry officer, Trietley was a leader in organizations = as=20 large as 3,200 people both during peacetime and the global war on = terror.=20 He managed resources in excess of $5 million. He planned and = organized=20 complex, multinational operations of great sensitivity under = challenging=20 conditions with strategic national security = implications.

After = receiving his=20 bachelor of science in education, Trietley entered the U.S. Army.=20 Professor of military science at his alma mater since 2003, he has = already=20 been twice selected for Who=92s Who of American College = Professors. Trietley=20 has also been honored with military awards, including the Combat=20 Infantryman=92s Badge for service in Afghanistan and the Bronze=20 Star.

His sense = of=20 accomplishment, though, has more to do with being able to serve = than with=20 awards.

=93Service = to the=20 United States as an Army officer has been extremely rewarding and=20 challenging. The opportunity to lead our nation=92s young men and = women in=20 uniform has filled me with intense pride and a strong sense of=20 accomplishment,=94 he said. =93I am profoundly thankful to live in = a country=20 where individual freedoms and the individual worth of all people = are=20 cherished and protected.=94

As a member = of the=20 faculty at St. Bonaventure, he is back in the environment where he = always=20 felt he belonged.

=93St = Bonaventure,=94 he=20 said, =93is truly about people =97 students, faculty, staff, = friars, and=20 administrators all working together to create a unique and special = environment for learning and discovery.=94

Honorees in = the Hall=20 of Distinction were selected by cIcu Board of Trustee member = presidents.=20 Trietley was nominated by Sr. Margaret Carney, O.S.F., University=20 president, who attended the ceremony. The master of ceremonies was = Bob=20 Kerrey, president of The New School and former governor of = Nebraska and=20 U.S. senator.

The Fr. = Joe=20 Awards are to honor those exceptional individuals in the St. = Bonaventure=20 community who have made others=92 experiences here better and = whose=20 Franciscan spirit may go unrecognized.

The = awards=92=20 namesake honors Fr. Joe Doino, a much beloved friar who died in = 1994 and=20 was known for his practical jokes, his love of tennis, his = dedication as=20 the SGA adviser. A professor, scholar, musician, preacher and = priest, Fr.=20 Joe became the first faculty member to receive the Faculty = Appreciation=20 Award posthumously.

BonaResponds refuses=20 to forget the Gulf Coast nearly three years after Hurricane=20 Katrina.

During = St.=20 Bonaventure University=92s spring break, BonaResponds, a = disaster-relief=20 group based at the University, took 63 volunteers =97 students, = faculty,=20 alumni and regional volunteers =97 to Pass Christian and = Pearlington, Miss.=20 Volunteers stayed at Randy=92s Rangers and the Pearlington = Recovery Center=20 from Feb. 22 to March 1, making this BonaResponds=92 eighth trip = to the=20 Coast. In addition, a small team of seven traveled to Gassville, = Ark., to=20 work with Hands on Disaster Response to help aid victims of the = February=20 tornados.

Over = the course=20 of the week in Mississippi, volunteers worked at several sites = hanging=20 drywall, painting, texturing, installing electrical and delivering = goods,=20 such as appliances, to those in need. Volunteers also ate at local = restaurants, getting a taste for life on the bayou, and visited = New=20 Orleans.

But = just as=20 important, they listened. They listened to Katrina=92s victims =97 = to the=20 people who are still suffering, still living in trailers and still = trying=20 to rebuild their homes and their lives.

Two and = a half=20 years later, trees, debris, garbage, parts of houses and slabs of=20 foundation remain strewn about many communities. People continue = to live=20 in tents outside of New Orleans. The fight is not over for the = people of=20 Mississippi.

=93The = storm was an=20 experience,=94 one victim recounted to the volunteers. =93But the = two and a=20 half years after have been holy hell.=94

Katrina = left both=20 physical and emotional scars on its victims. Many victims cannot = tell=20 their stories without tears welling in their eyes.

BonaResponds=20 gives the people of Mississippi hope as the number of volunteers = heading=20 south continues to dwindle.

=93Initially after=20 the storm, volunteers came by hundreds to help because it was = sexy,=94 said=20 Dr. Jim Mahar, founder of BonaResponds and assistant professor of = finance=20 at the University. =93Well, it=92s not sexy anymore. It=92s hard = work that at=20 times can be frustrating. That really says a lot about = BonaResponds nearly=20 three years after the storm after even many national groups pulled = out of=20 the area.=94

The = objective is=20 simple: =93We will continue to go back and help others until the = job is=20 done,=94 said Mahar.

=93Ninety percent=20 of what has been done has been done by volunteers =97 not by the = state or=20 federal government and not by contractors,=94 said the same victim = who now=20 works as a full-time volunteer in Pearlington.

BonaResponds=92=20 work is not limited to the Gulf Coast. Those interested in = volunteering on=20 a local level are welcome to attend Buffalo Day on March 29 at The = Valley=20 Center at 93 Leddy St. Volunteers will work at several sites = around the=20 city, including The Bob Lanier Center. The day will begin at 9:30 = a.m. and=20 wrap up at 4 p.m. with free dinner and music until 6 = p.m.

BonaResponds was=20 created in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. It has taken = approximately=20 500 volunteers to the Gulf Coast and led just as many volunteers = in=20 service projects throughout Western New York. BonaResponds aims to = be a=20 world-class organization whose mission is to help people in need, = as well=20 as to build better leaders and better communities. The group, = comprised of=20 students, faculty, staff, alumni and local residents, is run = completely=20 through donations.

On = Wednesday,=20 Feb. 27, 2008, he gave a seminar on the =93Autographs of Francis = of Assisi=94=20 and on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008, he gave a seminar on the = =93So-called=20 resignation of Francis of Assisi.=94 Also, on Tuesday, Feb. 26,=20 Godet-Calogeras was the guest of the State University = (Universit=E0 degli=20 Studi) of Milan and will give a seminar on the =93Status of = Franciscan=20 Studies in America.=94

Three = University=20 students attended the Region IX conference for the National = Orientation=20 Directors Association (NODA). Brianne Rehac (J/MC, =9210) and = Andrew Brown=20 (marketing, =9209) graduated from the Regional Orientation Leader = Institute=20 (ROLI), and were certified for their leadership skills in = Orientation and=20 New Student Transition Services. ROLI trains students in = competency areas=20 such as ethical decision making, conflict management, = accountability,=20 motivation and effective communication for student leaders in=20 Orientation,. Rehac and Brown are the student co-coordinators for = SBU=92s=20 Orientation 2008: Extraordinary Stories. In addition, student = Mackensie=20 Maneen (education, =9210) won an award in the case study = competition for=20 =93Best Problem Solving Skills.=94 The case study competition is a = NODA=20 tradition in which orientation staff members are able to practice = problem=20 solving and communication skills by applying their knowledge to a=20 real-life orientation situation.
