E-billing is a simple, convenient and paperless = process=20 that offers students and their families a safe means of receiving=20 electronic billing statements and a secure method of making = Web-based=20 payments.

=93Students are=20 already able to apply for financial aid, schedule classes and = check grades=20 online. This is one more service that they can do online,=94 said = University=20 bursar Ann Belvees.

The = e-billing=20 home page is designed to provide a general overview of a = student=92s=20 account. Included on the home screen is a link to their current = account=20 activity, summary information concerning the most recent bill, = recent=20 payments and financial aid.

Students also may=20 designate access to a third-party, so that another authorized = user, such=20 as a parent, can view their statement or make payments.

When a = new e-bill=20 is available for viewing, students will receive an e-mail to their = St.=20 Bonaventure University e-mail account. To access the statement, = students=20 are linked to my.sbu.edu, where the student=92s name and password = are used=20 for authentication. Payments can be made by check, electronic = check or by=20 credit card online.

The = University=20 has partnered with the firm CashNet to provide the e-billing=20 service.

IAs the=20 University advances into its 150th anniversary season, an = appropriate=20 feature has been added to the Archives=92 Web page =97 = games!

The = pages were=20 developed with the assistance of two future alumni, junior Mike = Licata and=20 freshman Jessica Bunting, who spend their working hours helping = University=20 Archives keep track of news clippings, work on the Web site, = develop its=20 video collection and anything else that may turn up.

Frank = said the=20 Archives=92 collection continues to develop with the assistance of = alumni=20 and family donations. In the past year, the University has = received=20 yearbooks from the 1920s and 1940s, photographs of campus from the = 1940s,=20 a laundry box from the 1930s, T-shirts from the 2000s, several = collections=20 of newspaper clippings, and various odds and ends from a number of = alums.=20 Many of those pieces made an appearance at Bonagany last = fall.

=93Alumni=20 contributions are always among those that attract attention there=20 (Bonagany) and in the Archives when visitors stop by,=94 Frank=20 said.

He = welcomes=20 donations of SBU memorabilia, which can be dropped off or mailed = to the=20 Archives Office in Friedsam Memorial Library.

Frank = is=20 particularly interested in student life, so scrapbooks of an = alum=92s time=20 on campus is especially valuable.

On = April 1, St.=20 Bonaventure will hold its 150th Anniversary Convocation in the = Reilly=20 Center Arena. Families of SBU founders Nicholas and Mary Devereux = and=20 founding friar, Pamphilus da Magliano, will attend and be honored = at the=20 Convocation.

The highly = acclaimed=20 musician and songwriter Samite, a native of Uganda, will perform = in=20 concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, at St. Bonaventure = University=92s=20 Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts.

The = concert, part=20 of the center=92s new world music series, is presented in = association with=20 Friends of Good Music. It is also presented in conjunction with = the=20 exhibition =93African Odyssey: The Arts and Cultures of a = Continent,=94 which=20 is on view at The Quick Center for the Arts until June 15. =

Samite = was born=20 and raised in Uganda, where his grandfather taught him to play the = traditional flute. His primary schooling was within the King=92s = Courtyard=20 where the royal musicians played for the king. That influence = permanently=20 instilled within young Samite the rhythms and patterns of the = traditional=20 music of his people, the Baganda.

Recognizing his=20 talents, a high school teacher in Kampala put a western flute in = Samite=92s=20 hands, putting him on the path to become one of the most highly = acclaimed=20 flutists in East Africa. In 1982 he fled as a political refugee to = Kenya,=20 where he played with the Bacchus Club Jazz Band and the popular = African=20 Heritage Band.

Increasingly=20 drawn to instruments and rhythms from the traditional Ugandan = music scene,=20 Samite eventually played solo at the Mount Kenya Safari Club in = Nairobi.=20 Delivering his mellifluous vocals in his mother tongue, Luganda, = he=20 mesmerized audiences with original compositions, playing on = kalimba=20 (finger-piano), marimba (wooden xylophone), litungu (a = seven-stringed=20 Kenyan instrument) and various flutes, traditional and = western.

Samite = immigrated=20 to the United States in 1987 and now lives in Ithaca. He has = performed=20 across the country and his music is regularly enjoyed by radio = listeners=20 nationwide. He has released seven CDs and his most recent, = =93Tunula Eno,=94=20 has reached No. 2 in the College Music Journal New World Chart = within the=20 first months of its release.

Joseph = A.=20 LoSchiavo, executive director of The Quick Center for the Arts, = heard=20 Samite perform in New York City. =93The gifted Samite is a master = of the=20 flute and a terrific vocalist. I immediately thought of engaging = him to=20 appear at The Quick Center while the exhibition =91African = Odyssey=92 is on=20 view here,=94 said LoSchiavo.

Examples of=20 several of the instruments that Samite will be playing are = displayed in=20 the exhibition, which has been seen by some 1,770 = visitors.

In = 2002, Samite=20 founded Musicians for World Harmony, a not-for-profit worldwide=20 organization dedicated to enabling musicians to share their music = to=20 promote peace, with a special emphasis on the displaced or = distressed. He=20 often travels with other musicians to perform for severely = disadvantaged=20 children.

Samite = composed=20 the music for a documentary film on 2004 Nobel Peace Prize winner = Wangari=20 Mathai of Kenya.

This = concert is=20 sponsored by The New York State Music Fund, established by the New = York=20 Attorney General at Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, and by The = New York=20 State Council on the Arts.

New book by alumnus Rich = Blake=20 details incredible story of Buffalo firefighter who awoke from = coma-like=20 state

As a = veteran=20 journalist, Rich Blake is used to the goose bumps that tingle his = arms=20 when he comes across a great story he wants to write. But he was = not=20 prepared for the amazing message from his younger brother Shawn = three=20 years ago: =93It=92s a miracle, Richie. Donny Herbert woke = up.=94

Donny = Herbert was=20 the husband of Blake=92s cousin Linda, and within 24 hours that = spring, news=20 organizations around the country were repeating this impossible = tale.=20 Donny Herbert was awake.

The = hardworking=20 Buffalo city firefighter was critically injured when a burning = roof caved=20 in on him in December 1995. A serious head injury and the = deprivation of=20 oxygen for six minutes combined to send Donny into a vegetative = state for=20 the next 10 years. Donny=92s unexplained emergence from his = coma-like state=20 for a 16-hour period on April 30, 2005, stunned his family and = captivated=20 the nation. The Buffalo man returned to lucidity, rediscovering = the world=20 for a precious day.

In a = new book,=20 =93The Day Donny Herbert Woke Up,=94 Blake explores the = Herberts=92 lives =97 from=20 Donny and Linda=92s blue collar, Catholic upbringings, to = Linda=92s struggle=20 to care for her four boys while maintaining Donny=92s = care.

Blake = is a=20 Buffalo native and 1990 journalism graduate of St. Bonaventure=20 University.

Some = believe that=20 divine intervention led to Donny=92s awakening; others offer a = more=20 scientific explanation. For Blake, it was important to embrace all = possibilities.

=93There=92s a subtle=20 mystery here, no question, one that I hope readers will try to = tackle for=20 themselves in their own terms. There=92s the Catholic Church=92s = very specific=20 definition of what a miracle is, and then there=92s the more = general sense=20 of something being miraculous because it=92s inexplicable. I do = think that=20 in some identifiable way, the footprints of a higher power are = everywhere=20 in this story,=94 he said.

Those = footprints=20 take the reader through Linda=92s daily prayers, the experimental = drug=20 cocktail Donny=92s doctor gives him, and a number of connections = to the late=20 Buffalo spiritual leader Fr. Nelson Baker.

When = Blake began=20 his research for the book, he was more prepared to embrace science = as the=20 cause of Donny=92s awakening. But as he explored the = circumstances, he=20 became convinced it was more than a medical miracle.

=93I = think the true=20 miracle was that despite being vegetative so long, for the most = part he=20 became his old self again; his spirit returned to his body,=94 = Blake=20 said.

It was = some six=20 months after the Herbert family=92s remarkable reunion that Blake = and Linda=20 discussed the possibility of sharing Donny=92s story in a book. = Linda=20 approached Blake at a party celebrating the publication of his = book about=20 the Buffalo Bills. She asked what his next book would be = about.

=93I=92d never=20 thought about doing a book on Don but found myself blurt out, =91I = should do=20 a book on Donny,=92=94 Blake said.

=93Sometimes I had=20 to venture into very sensitive territory. There were some painful = memories=20 I had to dredge up,=94 from Linda and her sons as well as = Donny=92s friends in=20 the fire department, Blake said.

Since = the book=92s=20 November 2007 release, it has received regional and national = attention: It=20 was excerpted in The Buffalo News over Thanksgiving, as well as in = Reader=92s Digest, and there was a =9360 Minutes=94 segment tied = into its=20 launch. Blake also appeared on =93Good Morning America=94 with = Linda Herbert,=20 and Warner Bros. has optioned the book for a movie.

Blake = has=20 received a lot of positive feedback on the book =93from real = people who were=20 touched by it.=94

=93I = feel=20 satisfied. Whether it=92s made into a movie or not, the experience = of=20 writing the book was awesome. As a journalist, it = was an=20 honor and privilege to tell this story. Clearly I=92m standing on = the=20 shoulders of the amazing Herbert family. I=92m proud of it,=94 he=20 said.

A 1990 = journalism=20 and mass communication graduate, Blake studied under journalism = school=20 namesake Russell J. Jandoli for his four years at Bona=92s. He is = a veteran=20 journalist and senior editor at Trader Monthly magazine. In 2004, = Blake=20 was nominated for a National Magazine Award in the reporting = category and=20 is the author of =93Talking Proud: Rediscovering the Magical = Season of the=20 1980 Buffalo Bills.=94 He lives in New York City.

Matthew Tornambe = recertified as a=20 Certified Fund Raising Executive

Matthew J. Tornambe, = associate=20 vice president for advancement at St. Bonaventure University, has = been=20 recertified as a Certified Fund Raising Executive = (CFRE).

Tornambe = joins more=20 than 5,000 professionals around the world who hold the CFRE = designation.=20 Individuals granted the CFRE credential have met a series of = standards set=20 by CFRE International, which include tenure in the profession, = education,=20 demonstrated fundraising achievement and a commitment to service = to=20 not-for-profit organizations. Candidates must pass a rigorous = written=20 examination testing the knowledge, skills and abilities required = of a=20 fundraising executive.

Tornambe = provides=20 leadership for prospect research, stewardship and special events, = and=20 fundraising communications staff members at the University. He is = also=20 responsible for major gifts, planned giving and a gift officer = portfolio.=20 Promoted to his current position in November 2007, Tornambe = previously=20 served St. Bonaventure as director of major gifts and planned=20 giving.

Martin Luther King = Day events=20 announced

In=20 celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Diversity Action = Committee,=20 in coordination with the Damietta Dream, is hosting the second = annual=20 Martin Luther King Jr. Student Showcase on Monday, Jan. 21, at 7 = p.m. in=20 the San Damiano Room in Francis Hall.

This year's theme is, = =93=85everybody can be great, because everybody can serve,=94 = taken from King's=20 speech The Drum Major Instinct. The showcase will be = highlighting=20 several of SBU's student organizations dedicated to service, = include a=20 performance from the Step Team, and a dessert reception = immediately=20 following. The director of the = Bioethics=20 Institute of New York Medical College will lead discussions on=20 spirituality in healing and health care during a three-day visit = to Mt.=20 Irenaeus and the St. Bonaventure University campus.

Br. Daniel = P.=20 Sulmasy, O.F.M., M.D., Ph.D., a Franciscan friar, holds the = Sisters of=20 Charity Chair in Ethics at St. Vincent=92s Hospital=97Manhattan, = and serves as=20 professor of medicine and director of the Bioethics Institute of = New York=20 Medical College, Valhalla, N.Y.

On = Thursday, Jan. 31,=20 the University community is invited to join students in Clare = College=92s=20 University Forum capstone course for Sulmasy=92s 4 p.m. address in = Dresser=20 Auditorium titled =93Ethical Issues in Care at the End of Life.=94 = Sulmasy=20 will also be the guest speaker during the noon Friday Forum on = Feb. 1 in=20 Doyle Hall Dining Room (open to faculty, staff and invited = guests).=20

Dr. Paula=20 J. Sr. Margaret is = one of=20 the original authors of this revised Third Order Rule.

Dr. Chris=20 Stanley, professor of theology, traveled to Scotland in = early=20 December 2007 to deliver papers to graduate seminars at the = University of=20 Edinburgh and the University of St. Andrews and to speak at a = Scottish=20 seminary, Highland Theological College. The visits were funded by = the UK=20 Fulbright Commission. Stanley was working in the fall semester in=20 Limerick, Ireland, on a Fulbright Fellowship.
