      musician and songwriter Samite, a native of Uganda, will perform =

      concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, at St. Bonaventure =

      Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><BR>The =
concert, part=20
      of the center=92s new world music series, is presented in =
association with=20
      Friends of Good Music. It is also presented in conjunction with =
the=20
      exhibition =93African Odyssey: The Arts and Cultures of a =
Continent,=94 which=20
      is on view at The Quick Center for the Arts until June 15. =

      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><BR>Samite =
was born=20
      and raised in Uganda, where his grandfather taught him to play the =

      traditional flute. His primary schooling was within the King=92s =
Courtyard=20
      where the royal musicians played for the king. That influence =
permanently=20
      instilled within young Samite the rhythms and patterns of the =
traditional=20
      music of his people, the Baganda.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, =
sans-serif"><BR>Recognizing his=20
      talents, a high school teacher in Kampala put a western flute in =
Samite=92s=20
      hands, putting him on the path to become one of the most highly =
acclaimed=20
      flutists in East Africa. In 1982 he fled as a political refugee to =
Kenya,=20
      where he played with the Bacchus Club Jazz Band and the popular =
African=20
      Heritage Band.</FONT></P>

sans-serif"><BR>Increasingly=20
      drawn to instruments and rhythms from the traditional Ugandan =
music scene,=20
      Samite eventually played solo at the Mount Kenya Safari Club in =
Nairobi.=20
      Delivering his mellifluous vocals in his mother tongue, Luganda, =
he=20
      mesmerized audiences with original compositions, playing on =
kalimba=20
      (finger-piano), marimba (wooden xylophone), litungu (a =
seven-stringed=20
      Kenyan instrument) and various flutes, traditional and =
western.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><BR>Samite =
immigrated=20
      to the United States in 1987 and now lives in Ithaca. He has =
performed=20
      across the country and his music is regularly enjoyed by radio =
listeners=20
      nationwide. He has released seven CDs and his most recent, =

      has reached No. 2 in the College Music Journal New World Chart =
within the=20
      first months of its release.</FONT></P>

      when he comes across a great story he wants to write. But he was =

      prepared for the amazing message from his younger brother Shawn =

      years ago: =93It=92s a miracle, Richie. Donny Herbert woke =
up.=94</FONT></P>

      the husband of Blake=92s cousin Linda, and within 24 hours that =

      organizations around the country were repeating this impossible =

      Buffalo city firefighter was critically injured when a burning =
roof caved=20
      in on him in December 1995. A serious head injury and the =
deprivation of=20
      oxygen for six minutes combined to send Donny into a vegetative =

      the next 10 years. Donny=92s unexplained emergence from his =
coma-like state=20
      for a 16-hour period on April 30, 2005, stunned his family and =
captivated=20
      the nation. The Buffalo man returned to lucidity, rediscovering =
the world=20
      for a precious day.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><BR>In a =
new book,=20
      =93The Day Donny Herbert Woke Up,=94 Blake explores the =
Herberts=92 lives =97 from=20
      Donny and Linda=92s blue collar, Catholic upbringings, to =
Linda=92s struggle=20
      to care for her four boys while maintaining Donny=92s =
care.</FONT></P>

      scientific explanation. For Blake, it was important to embrace all =

      mystery here, no question, one that I hope readers will try to =

think that=20
      in some identifiable way, the footprints of a higher power are =

      take the reader through Linda=92s daily prayers, the experimental =
drug=20
      cocktail Donny=92s doctor gives him, and a number of connections =

      Buffalo spiritual leader Fr. Nelson Baker.</FONT></P>

Blake began=20
      his research for the book, he was more prepared to embrace science =
as the=20
      cause of Donny=92s awakening. But as he explored the =
circumstances, he=20

      miracle was that despite being vegetative so long, for the most =

      the Buffalo Bills. She asked what his next book would be =

      thought about doing a book on Don but found myself blurt out, =91I =

      a book on Donny,=92=94 Blake said.</FONT></P>

      story as a family member was often difficult.</FONT></P>

      to venture into very sensitive territory. There were some painful =
memories=20
      I had to dredge up,=94 from Linda and her sons as well as =
Donny=92s friends in=20
