St. = Bonaventure=92s=20 147th Commencement focused on the great Franciscan heritage that = its=20 students share. Some 414 undergraduate and 106 graduate students=20 participated in the graduation exercises in the Reilly Center = Arena.=20

Fr. = Dominic, vicar=20 provincial of the Province of the Most Holy Name of Jesus, was the = keynote=20 speaker. An internationally recognized expert in the field of = church=20 history and Franciscan studies, he served as interim SBU president = from=20 2003 to 2004 =97 the period during which undergraduate members of = the Class=20 of 2007 were freshmen and sophomores.

The = University also=20 honored its most senior friar, Fr. Daniel A. Hurley, O.F.M., with = an=20 honorary degree, a Doctor of Pedagogy. Fr. Dan is a founding = member of the=20 Mt. Irenaeus community and is celebrating his 45th year of service = to St.=20 Bonaventure this year.

U.S. Sen. = Chuck=20 Schumer also made an unscheduled appearance, telling graduates = that =93if=20 there was ever a time to aspire to your dreams, your time is now. = =85 Don=92t=20 let the fear of failure deter you.=94

Fr. = Dominic, a class=20 of 1967 alum, said a woman came up to him at a church service in = Baltimore=20 last spring and told a tale that made him beam.

=93She = said, =91You must=20 be doing something right up there to have 10 percent of your = students go=20 on a relief trip to the Gulf Coast,=92=94 Fr. Dominic said. =93I = was never more=20 proud to be a Franciscan.=94

Ekimoff, Farrell named Ideal Bonaventure=20 Students

St. Bonaventure = University=20 seniors Christopher Ekimoff and Erin Farrell were recognized as = Ideal=20 Bonaventure Students on Saturday, May 12, during the = University=92s Honors=20 Luncheon, and again Sunday during its 147th Commencement=20 Exercises.

The Ideal = Bonaventure=20 Students, who are selected by a committee that receives = nominations from=20 the University community, are recognized as exemplifying the = spirit of St.=20 Bonaventure and the ideals of St. Francis through community = service and=20 academic excellence.

The = honorable=20 mentions were Emily Grobmyer of Charlottesville, Va., and Ryan = Cleckner of=20 Rochester.

Ekimoff, = son of David=20 and Pamela Ekimoff of Webster, N.Y., is an accounting major and = music=20 minor. Ekimoff has been a varsity student-athlete and a member of = the=20 men=92s swimming and diving team at SBU for four years, leading = the team to=20 the 2006 Atlantic 10 Championship and second place in 2004, 2005 = and 2007.=20 In March, he was named the Atlantic 10 Men=92s Swimming and Diving = Student-Athlete of the Year.

Captain of = the=20 2006-07 men=92s swimming and diving team, Ekimoff has also been = active on=20 the Student-Athlete Advisory Council, Honors Council and = Bonaventure=20 Accounting Association. He has served as director of The Last = Second, a=20 campus men=92s a cappella group, and has assisted the Office of = Admissions=20 as a Student Ambassador.

Ekimoff has = participated in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, which = brings=20 federal and state income tax benefits to people with low and = moderate=20 incomes by providing free income tax preparation and e-filing. He = also=20 volunteers at The Warming House, the University=92s student-run = soup=20 kitchen.

=93Chris is = an=20 outstanding young man who completely embodies the spirit of St. = Francis=20 and the values of St. Bonaventure University,=94 said Barbara = Questa, senior=20 associate athletic director.

=93As a=20 student-athlete, he could have spent all his time focusing on his = athletic=20 pursuits. However, he chose to be involved in numerous campus = social and=20 academic organizations yet still found the time to volunteer his = services=20 to those less fortunate than himself,=94 added Questa.

Erin = Farrell, the=20 2007 Ideal Bonaventure Woman, is an elementary/special education = major=20 from Pittsford, N.Y. She is the daughter of Gregory and Mary Jo = Farrell.=20

A Merit = Scholarship=20 recipient, Farrell has been named to the Dean=92s List each = semester at SBU=20 and is a member of Kappa Delta Pi, an international honor society = for=20 education students.

Farrell has = been=20 active in various aspects of University Ministries, including = Students for=20 the Mountain, Bona Buddies and Mt. Irenaeus=92 Mountain on the = Road events.=20

Robert M. = Donius,=20 vice president for University Ministries, describes Farrell as = =93a gracious=20 and grace-filled leader in many places of our campus life.=94 =

=93She = motivates others=20 to do well. As a leader of Mountain on the Road gatherings around = the=20 country, she makes us proud as she interacts with alums. She will = continue=20 to make us proud as an alum,=94 Donius said.

Farrell has = also=20 served as a Eucharistic minister at Mass on campus and is on staff = at the=20 Sandra A. and William L. Richter Center. In March 2006, she was = part of=20 SBU=92s largest service trip in school history, joining the = BonaResponds=20 hurricane relief trip to the Gulf Coast.

Farrell = will continue=20 her education in St. Bonaventure=92s Childhood Literacy master=92s = program and=20 has received a graduate assistantship for the Office of Graduate=20 Admissions.

University salutes four outstanding = faculty=20 members

St. Bonaventure = University=20 recognized four outstanding faculty members Saturday, May 12, = during its=20 annual Honors Luncheon.

Dr. Richard = Simpson=20 teaches literature, poetry and writing at the University, has = taught jazz=20 improvisation and the history of jazz for the University=92s = visual and=20 performing arts program, and is a well-known regional jazz = musician.=20

For more = than 35=20 years at St. Bonaventure, Simpson has provided students with = relentless=20 lessons in grammar and style, introduced them to the complex = structures of=20 poetic language, and connected them with British romantics. =

New York = Times=20 national columnist Dan Barry, a 1980 graduate and former student = of=20 Simpson, says that =93every time I sit down to write a story =85 I = hear Dr.=20 Simpson=92s voice, whispering to me still about structure, and = voice, and=20 the use of words as musical notes.=94

What = distinguishes=20 Simpson, Barry said, is his =93passion for The Word and its = meaning, its=20 sound, its etymology.=94

=93He draws = from his=20 students an appreciation, even an excitement, for how the = arrangement of a=20 few letters can come to stand for emotions like love and longing = and=20 grief,=94 said Barry.

Simpson=92s = students =97=20 current and former =97 say he wants the best for all his students, = sees the=20 best in every one of them, and challenges each one to be the best. =

=93His = enthusiasm for=20 his subject matter is beyond infectious. Whether he=92s talking = about a John=20 Coltrane solo, the San Francisco Giants=92 pennant chances or = =91The Rime of=20 the Ancient Mariner,=92 it=92s impossible not to get swept along = for the=20 ride,=94 said Brian Moritz, a 1999 journalism/mass communication = graduate.=20

That = enthusiasm=20 extends to his critiques of students=92 work, where he continues = to teach,=20 offering detailed and encouraging comments. A =93red badge of = compositional=20 courage=94 would come when his comments were longer than the paper = itself.=20

Simpson=92s = academic=20 interests are in British Romantic Literature and Contemporary = American=20 Poetry. He has been commissioned for numerous readings of his own = and=20 others=92 poetry as well as musical performances. He has had = dozens of poems=20 published in refereed journals and is a contributing editor to = poetry=20 journal Tar River Poetry and NEO, a bilingual American-Portuguese = literary=20 journal.

Forthcoming = this year=20 is a commissioned translation of a short story by the = distinguished=20 Norwegian fiction writer Bjarte Breiteig for theNEO journal, and a = nonfiction personal essay, =93Requiem =97 Almost,=94 which will = appear in THE=20 (The Human Experience).

Simpson=92s = saxophone=20 solos have appeared on two commercial musical recordings and he is = presently the financial producer of a jazz recording project in=20 collaboration with composer and guitarist Tom Rizzo, =9272. =

Simpson = holds a=20 bachelor=92s degree and master=92s degree from Brigham Young = University. He=20 earned a Ph.D. from Kent State University in 1973.

Dr. Jeffrey = White,=20 who joined the University in 1976, became a professor of classical = languages in 2006. He has been chair of the Department of = Classical=20 Languages since 1987 as well as head of the Program in Irish = Studies since=20 1999.

White = researches and=20 publishes in the areas of Greco-Roman mythology, Latin paleography = and=20 textual criticism, and Renaissance literature in Latin (history = and=20 chorography particularly).

In his = nomination of=20 White, associate professor Dr. Steven J. Brown noted that = White=92s career=20 has been marked by steady, meticulous and productive scholarship = that has=20 originated with and contributed to his distinguished teaching at = SBU. In=20 July 2005, Harvard University Press published Volume I of Biondo = Flavio=92s=20 Italia Illuminata, edited, translated and annotated by White. =

The = translation has=20 earned scholarly praise in reviews, including the New England = Classical=20 Journal and the New York Review of Books.

He has = authored=20 articles in classics and Renaissance journals and served since = 1980 as a=20 consultant and reader for Medieval & Renaissance Texts & = Studies=20 and, since 1987, as associate editor of the humanities journal=20 Cithara.

White = received a=20 bachelor=92s degree in classics from Boston College and earned his = master=92s=20 and doctoral degrees in classics from the State University of New = York at=20 Buffalo, where he was an NDEA Title IV fellow.

He has also = been an=20 officer and president of SBU=92s chapter of the American = Association of=20 University Professors, coached and moderated the University=92s = Club Ice=20 Hockey Program and has served on academic committees for the=20 implementation of the Clare College core curriculum, particularly = in Irish=20 Studies.

Dr. Alva V. = Cellini=20 has been an active member of the St. Bonaventure University = community,=20 serving on numerous University committees, task forces and = councils, most=20 notably as a longtime member of the Faculty Senate.

=93The = number of=20 University-wide committees she has served on or chaired is beyond=20 impressive,=94 said Dr. John Mulryan, Distinguished Board of = Trustees=20 Professor of English.

=93Not only = has she=20 represented her department on these committees, but she has worked = on=20 issues vital to the University such as student retention, national = educational standards, minority recruitment, globalization, sexual = harassment, and trends in student life. In department committees = Alva has=20 worked on hiring, recruitment, course development, and the = advancement of=20 both Spanish and Italian studies.=94

Cellini has = worked=20 without fanfare and without publicity, Mulryan said.

=93Working = behind the=20 scenes, she has done more than anyone that I can think of to make = the=20 University a welcoming place for students, a caring environment = for=20 faculty and staff, and a place of learning that promotes both = intellectual=20 excitement and rigid academic standards,=94 added = Mulryan.

Interested = in=20 furthering the cause of the Department of Modern Languages, = Cellini=20 annually plans trips for students to Spain. She has developed = several=20 courses in Latin American literature and culture. And, she is = deeply=20 concerned not only about her students=92 education, but their = personal=20 welfare.

=93On = campus =85 many=20 students seek her out for difficulties they may be having, and she = follows=20 up on their concerns giving time and effort far beyond anything = required=20 by her teaching responsibilities,=94 wrote Fr. Allen H. Weber, = O.F.M.,=20 Ph.D., in his nomination of Cellini.

=93Perhaps = what I value=20 most in Dr. Cellini is her dual responsiveness to the world of = books and=20 to the world in which we live. She is equally at home whether she = is=20 discussing University business or the political situation in Latin = America,=94 added Dr. Paul J. Schafer, associate professor of = education.=20

In 1999, = Cellini=20 received a faculty research grant allowing her to publish the = first=20 English translation and wrote an introduction to =93Juan Martin El = Empecinado=94 by Benito P=E9rez Gald=F3s (1843-1920), a volume in = his =93Episodios=20 nacionales,=94 a series of novels recounting Spain=92s history = from 1805 to=20 the end of the century.

She has = conducted=20 professional workshops in teaching second languages to = professionals,=20 presented numerous scholarly papers, and chaired sessions at = national and=20 international conferences in the United States, Mexico, Brazil, = Peru and=20 Chile. She publishes regularly in journals, including = MultiCultural=20 Review.

Her most = recent=20 article, =93La visi=F3n del mundo andino en la narrativa de = C=E9sar Vallejo=94=20 (The Vision of the Andean World in C=E9sar Vallejo=92s Narrative), = appeared in=20 the literary journal Cuadernos de Lazarrillo, Winter Issue, 2007,=20 published by Ambos Mundos in Salamanca, Spain.

An alumna = of St.=20 Bonaventure, Cellini earned a master=92s degree in romance = languages and a=20 Ph.D. in comparative literature from Binghamton University. =

Dr. Mark = Huddle=20 joined the University faculty four years ago. He teaches U.S. = survey=20 courses plus a wide range of upper-level courses in U.S. history.=20

His = colleagues in the=20 Department of History describe him as =93a popular teacher whose = courses=20 regularly oversubscribe. Dr. Huddle has a knack for not only = attracting=20 students but also for then pushing them to ask the hard questions=20 necessary to engage history and the world. =85 The popularity of = his courses=20 is not only because they address the concerns of contemporary = students,=20 but because his classes challenge students.=94

In addition = to heavy=20 service teaching, Huddle has introduced several new courses: Civil = Rights=20 to Black Power, 1941-1980; Harlem Renaissance: African America and = the=20 Politics of Culture, 1919-1939; and The Politics of Pop: Popular = Music and=20 20th Century American Culture.

In addition = to=20 Huddle=92s effort and success in the classroom, he is an active = and=20 publishing scholar in the field of African-American history and = race=20 relations. Huddle has authored several scholarly and popular = articles as=20 well as many scholarly presentations and reviews.

He is in = the final=20 stages of his first book, =93The Paradox of Color,=94 which is = with the=20 University of Pennsylvania Press. He is working on a second book, = =93Roi=20 Ottley=92s War,=94 with the University Press of Kansas, and he = also has signed=20 a contract with Ivan Dee Publishers to write a biography of Marcus = Garvey.=20

Out of the = classroom,=20 Huddle took a leadership role on the University=92s Strategic = Planning=20 Committee for Diversity and served as faculty adviser for the = Bonaventure=20 Art and Media Fair (a.k.a. BAM!).

In addition = to the=20 two-semester honors project, students must take four honors = courses, an=20 advanced honors seminar, and achieve a minimum 3.25 grade point = average to=20 be awarded an honors degree. The Honors Degree is the highest=20 undergraduate degree offered at St. Bonaventure University. =

Social = interactions=20 among mammals appear to be distributed not randomly among all = possible=20 social comparisons but rather selectively toward certain members = of that=20 individual=92s species. Olfaction is a key sense that many mammals = use in=20 choosing mates and in recognizing offspring and other kin. This = study=20 addresses the association between genetic relatedness of two = individual=20 hamsters and the chemical similarity of their body odors. The = hypothesis=20 presented is that the more closely related two males are, the more = similar=20 their chemical makeup will be. A female will distinguish between = two=20 unrelated males while perceiving two siblings as the = same.

Over the = past 50=20 years, the Allegheny National Forest (ANF) has experienced a major = shift=20 from a strictly federal-based policy creation approach to one = increasingly=20 taking into account the desires of local citizens, organizations = and=20 special interest groups. The change from occasionally asking = advice from=20 the local community and the public to the current requirement to = consider=20 the desires and positions of many local and non-local groups and = movements=20 has been considerable. This project studies the history of the ANF = and=20 places specific emphasis on the difficulties of managing the = forest to=20 fulfill the multi-use imperative in the face of increasing = involvement=20 from environmental groups.

A work of = creative=20 non-fiction, this project represents one student=92s personal = journey of=20 professional self-discovery while negotiating the complexities of = planning=20 out a future and applying to law school. Through a series of = interviews,=20 journal reflections, and personal conversations with family, = friends and=20 professors, Amanda takes her readers on an open and honest = exploration of=20 her developing goals and search for a career path that best meets = her=20 personality and values. The product is a text that encourages = readers to=20 ask these questions of themselves.

The information contained in this = publication is the direct result of a major marketing research = study=20 conducted on the university, and it seeks to fill in the gaps = within the=20 current marketing plan. The electronic delivery of JourneyIN is = designed=20 for easy updating based on changing demographics and continued=20 improvements to the university.

=93The Absent Heroine: An Examination of = Fanny Price=20 and Mary Crawford in Jane Austen=92s =91Mansfield Park=92=94 = Project Adviser: Dr.=20 Richard Simpson (English)

This study = argues=20 that =93Mansfield Park=94 is without a heroine. Jane Austen=92s = characterization=20 of the two central female characters does not allow for a clear=20 classification. What separates these two characters from = Austen=92s other=20 heroines is that Fanny Price and Mary Crawford do not experience a = change=20 of their core self. Most of Austen=92s heroines experience an = evolution that=20 demands self-doubt and self-inspection, forcing them to confront = their=20 pre-conceived attitudes and opinions. =93Mansfield Park=94 is a = novel of=20 social, political, sexual, religious and moral upheaval. Unlike = Austen=92s=20 other novels, it extends far beyond the assumed narrative course = of=20 courtship, opposition and inevitable matrimony. Claiming that = neither=20 Fanny nor Mary functions as a heroine does not imply that either = character=20 lacks complexity or importance. In fact, it only serves to add to = the=20 importance of both characters as they function within the=20 novel.

=93A Strategic = Public=20 Relations Initiative for the Franciscan Friars of St. Bonaventure=20 University=94 Project Adviser: Br. Basil Valente, O.F.M. (J/MC) =

This public = relations=20 campaign is designed to provide the St. Bonaventure Friary with a = variety=20 of initiatives to increase awareness of the Friary, to educate the = public=20 on the management of the Friary, and to remind everyone of the = work of the=20 friars and their importance to the identity and mission of the = university.=20 The campaign will focus on the value and importance that the = friars place=20 on service, their faith, and their academic studies. The campaign = will=20 reach out to audiences that recognize the importance of the St.=20 Bonaventure Friary and those who hold the friars in high regard. = This=20 public relations campaign is very important to the Friary as an=20 organization because they are independent of St. Bonaventure = University=20 and completely self-sustaining.

"SoundQ: Software = for=20 Playback Editing of Theatrical Cues=94
Project Adviser: Dr. = David Levine=20 (Computer Science)

SoundQ is = software=20 for theatrical sound effect playback. The application is designed = to aid=20 sound technicians in maintaining precise timing and high quality = audio for=20 each production. The program allows for sound cues loaded into = each show=20 to be manipulated by the sound technician in accordance with the=20 director=92s artistic vision. SoundQ features include: play cue, = set level,=20 fade setting, bump cue, fade stop and manual cross fade. In = addition to=20 these technical features, each cue includes information about the = cue=20 ready to be played, including notes and run time. The program is = written=20 in Java due to its familiarity, support, libraries and=20 portability.

Sr. Suzanne Kush named director of = Franciscan Center=20 for Social Concern

Buffalo = native Sr.=20 Suzanne Kush, C.S.S.F., has been named director of the Franciscan = Center=20 for Social Concern at St. Bonaventure University.

=93In = announcing this=20 appointment, I am delighted that a person with Sr. Suzanne=92s = gifts,=20 knowledge and skills, personal life commitments as a Franciscan = religious,=20 as well as her professional background, has accepted this = appointment,=94=20 said Br. F. Edward Coughlin, O.F.M., vice president for Franciscan = mission=20 at the University.

The center = was=20 established in 1998 to =93encourage in all members of the = University=20 community a yearning for justice and peace, a greater respect for = life and=20 a deeper reverence for creation.=94 The Franciscan friars of Holy = Name=20 Province provided the initial endowment for the center. =

After almost = of=20 decade of teaching in Buffalo Catholic schools at both the = elementary and=20 secondary level, Sr. Suzanne became a director of religious = education and=20 served at several parishes. From 1980 to 1986, she worked at Villa = Maria=20 College, and then was assigned to vocation and formation for = religious=20 life ministry.

Sr. Suzanne = holds a=20 master=92s degree in Franciscan Studies from St. Bonaventure, a = master=92s=20 degree in history from the State University College of New York at = Buffalo, a master=92s degree in religious studies from Aquinas = College in=20 Grand Rapids, Mich., a bachelor=92s degree in history from = Canisius College,=20 and an associate=92s degree from Villa Maria.

Her = background in=20 Franciscan Studies and history and experience in adult education = programs=20 will allow her to enter in discussions around education, pedagogy, = and how=20 the SBU curriculum is preparing its students. Sr. Suzanne will = pursue an=20 integrated approach, stressing the educational aspects of = programs, and=20 coordinate with others on campus.

This past = year, Sr.=20 Suzanne has been working as a research assistant on the Third = Order=20 Regular Rule Project at SBU=92s Franciscan Institute and as an = adjunct=20 professor at Felician College in Lodi, N.J.

The = Franciscan Center=20 for Social Concern has not had a full-time director since 2005, = when Fr.=20 Jud Weiksnar, O.F.M., was reassigned by the Holy Name Province.=20

In the past = few=20 years, St. Bonaventure has made significant strides in expanding a = range=20 and variety of service internships as well as significantly = increasing the=20 number of students, faculty and staff who are involved in service = projects=20 through such initiatives as the Journey Project, BonaResponds, the = Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program and Students In Free = Enterprise,=20 Br. Edward said.

SBU inducts eight into Sigma Delta=20 Pi

St.=20 Bonaventure University inducted eight students into the Xi Delta = Chapter=20 of Sigma Delta Pi, the national Spanish Honor Society, during a = ceremony=20 April 13.

Membership = in the=20 honor society is open to all students who are at least a = second-semester=20 sophomore and have at least one upper-level course in Spanish = culture or=20 civilization. Additionally, they must have a least a B average in = Spanish=20 courses.

The = students inducted=20 were sophomore Meghan Whitcomb, seniors Ron Morgan and Lindsay = Saternow;=20 and juniors Carol Ann McCauley, Kimberly Trimboli, Kelsey Gorman = and=20 Allison Martino and Kelley Stoneham.

The new = officers will=20 be elected in the fall for the 2007-08 academic year.

The adviser = for the=20 chapter is Dr. Leigh A. Simone, assistant professor in the = Department of=20 Modern Languages.
