2021 Hellinger Award Winner- Mike Hogan

Hellinger Award winner Mike Hogan graduated from the Jandoli School of Communication with a bachelor’s degree in journalism.

During his undergraduate career at St. Bonaventure, he gained experience with several campus news outlets. He held numerous positions at The Bona Venture newspaper, including one semester as editor-in-chief as a junior. He also gained broadcasting experience with ESPN+.

Hogan did his most meaningful work for TAPinto Greater Olean, an online community newspaper staffed by St. Bonaventure students and edited by instructors Anne and Dr. Rich Lee. He intensely covered COVID-19’s impact on the local area and university community, reporting on everything from outbreaks, student suspensions and university security. He earned TAPinto Greater Olean’s first-ever public service award for his work.

Hogan has always wanted to be a sports reporter, and he gained valuable experience as the St. Bonaventure men’s basketball beat writer for TAPinto. He covered Atlantic 10 Conference tournaments and the 2021 NCAA Tournament for the publication.

Alongside longtime sportswriter David Boclair, Hogan covered the Tennessee Titans from May 2020 to May 2021 for Sports Illustrated’s AllTitans page. He closely reported on Derrick Henry’s path to becoming the eighth running back in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards in a season.
