2000 Hellinger Award Winner- Elizabeth Tascione Licamele
Rather than the usual location of Manhattan, the Hellinger Awards in 2000 were held in Queens at the Water's Edge.
A Spanish minor in addition to a journalism/mass communications major, Elizabeth Tascione was incredibly active on campus as an undergraduate. She served as a marketing director for The Regina A. Quick Center of the Arts, held several editing positions (including editor in chief) for The Bona Venture, was a member of Kappa Tau Alpha and Sigma Delta Pi (a Spanish honor society), was a disc jockey for WSBU and was the editor of Online with Alumni (the computer science department newsletter). Tascione was also the founder of Bonaventure's Organization for Student Safety, which provided a campus escort system, and served on the 50th anniversary committee for the journalism and mass communication department. For her achievements, Tascione was given the Heather Lohr Award for Student Government and was a runner-up for the Jandoli Award for Outstanding Achievement in Print Journalism.
Off campus distinctions included internships with The Albany Times Union and The Olean Times-Herald. Tascione wrote, produced and directed "Nestled in the Foothills: The History of Allegany, N.Y," a documentary. After graduation, she found employment with U.S. Newswire in Washington, DC and attended graduate school at American University. She married 1999 Hellinger co-winner Greg Licamele.
