1991 Hellinger Award Winner- RoseAnn Kern Haseley
RoseAnn Kern was the winner of the 1991 Hellinger Award, but for the first time in the program's history, Dr. Russell Jandoli wasn't there for the festivities. The legendary professor, friend and mentor to generations of journalism and mass communication students had passed away earlier that year.
Kern, originally from Lockport, New York, had an outstanding 3.9 GPA as an undergrad while working for the Bona Venture, eventually serving as editor in chief. She also served as co-editor of The College Trend, a student magazine for campus, and as a staff writer for the Bonadieu. Kern was a member of several societies relating to journalism, including Kappa Tau Alpha, National Honorary Mass Communication/Journalism Society, the Society of Professional Journalists and Women in Communications, Inc. Internship experiences included The Buffalo News and Western New York Catholic, the monthly newspaper for the Diocese of Buffalo.
After graduation, Kern joined The Finger Lakes Times, based out of Geneva, New York.
Also during the 1991 Awards, Fr. Bernard Creighton, OFM, was awarded the Hellinger Award that he had earned as a student in 1961, but turned down when he joined the Franciscan Order.
