Buffalo native Kevin Kirkland was given the Mark Hellinger Award in 1985. An editor of The Bona Venture while and undergraduate, Kirkland was a member of Sigma Delta Chi and the Society of Collegiate Journalists. He won a number of honors outside of the classroom, including distinctions as one of 20 fellows nationwide for the Pulliam Foundation of Indianapolis and as a fellow for the American Political Journalism Conference. He was an intern for The Washington Monthly in 1984 and served as a sports correspondent for the United Press International during the 1983-1984 season.
