1973 Hellinger Award Winner- Matthew Dudek

Gladys Glad Gottlieb and Jim Bishop present Hellinger winner Matthew Dudek with the financial award that comes with the honor.

 

The Hellinger Award was one of many awards that Matthew Dudek earned during his time at St. Bonaventure. Named the Ideal Bonaventure Student upon graduation, Dudek was also elected to the 1972-1973 issue of "Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities" and had the highest GPA among graduating journalism seniors. He was also awarded the Frank E. Gannett Scholarship and The Newspaper Fund Fellowship in copyediting, which earned him a three-week summer course at Ohio State University before assignment aas a copy editor on the Courier Express in Buffalo.

Dudek, hailing from Churchville, New York, climbed his way through the staff at The Bona Venture, serving as managing editor, associate editor, editorial editor, new editor and assistant news editor before becoming advisory editor and editor-in-chief. He was also vice president of the campus chapters of Sigma Delta Chi, a professional journalistic society and Pi Delta Epsilon, a national collegiate communications honor society. Dudek became a member of the editorial staff at The Utica Observer-Dispatch after graduation.
