1964 Hellinger Award Winner- Anthony Cardinale

Cardinale with Jim Bishop at the Hellinger Award Ceremony.

Anthony Cardinale from Fredonia, New York was given the honor of the 1964 Hellinger Award. Along with journalism, he took up minors in English, history and philosophy and while at Bonaventure worked his way to editor of The Laurel and The Bona Venture. Other interests as an undergraduate included membership in the Press Club, Press Day Committee, Student Association for University Development and Delta Epsilon Sigma, a national honor society. A member of the Third Order of St. Francis, Cardinale was included in the 1964 "Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities." The job offer was waived by Cardinale (at least initially) as he sought admittance into graduate school to further his journalism education, eventually getting his master's degree from Northwestern and getting a job with the Buffalo News.

By 1964, the Awards Committee had expanded to 27 members, among them well-known newsmen Pierre Salinger, "Red" Smith and Walter Winchell.
