1963 Hellinger Award Winner- Charles Ross MacRoy
Charles MacRoy, incredibly active in his hometown of Olean, was designated as the winner of the 1963 Hellinger Award, which was given at Commencement. MacRoy, at the time of the award, was already working full time for the Olean Times Herald. The 22-year-old was given the award based on his proficiency in that job as well as for the excellent academic record he compiled during his four years at Bonaventure.
A fitness fanatic, MacRoy was active in the YMCA, Boy Scouts of America, multiple boys' sports leagues, served as a junior varsity football coach at Archbishop Walsh High School and was a lifeguard and water safety instructor in Olean and the surrounding area.
