1962 Hellinger Award Winner- Sal DeVivo

DeVivo receives the financial award that comes with the Hellinger from University President Fr. Brian Lhota, OFM and Gladys Glad Gottlieb, Mark Hellinger's widow.

Saratoga Springs native Salvatore J. DeVivo was the recipient of the 1962 Mark Hellinger Award. A veteran newspaper writer and sports editor already by the time he graduated St. Bonaventure, DeVivo wrote for and served as editor of The Saratogian and was also employed by the Schenectady Gazette during the summers of his undergraduate years.

At Bonaventure, he wrote for The Bona Venture, working his way up to the position of editor by his senior year. The paper won first place honors in both national and local competitions under his guidance. DeVivo also was editor of the Bonadieu and served as an announcer for the campus radio station. For all of his accolades, he was named to the "Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities in 1962." Along with the $500 dollar purse, DeVivo was offered a job at the Gazette in Niagara Falls, New York. Just prior to winning the Hellinger Award, DeVivo got married.

1962 also saw the Hellinger Committee continue to expand. Notable members included (along with Jim Bishop and Dr. Jandoli) Douglas Edwards, John Charles Daly, William Randolph Hearst, and editors of prominent newpapers from Los Angeles to New York City among others.
