The Alumni Service Award was initially installed in 1982, although there never seemed to be any clear direction as to the purpose of the award. It was known by several names, including the Professional Service Award (1984) and the Jim Bishop Award (1987). The award was taken out of the Hellinger ceremonies in 1988; criteria for the Alumnus/a of the Year Award included the service to the St. Bonaventure University community, what the Alumni Service Award was attempting to recognize, shortly thereafter.

Originally given to anyone in the mass communication field that exemplified the moral and ethical ideals that Considine exhibited, in 1986 it became an honor exclusively for those in working in print journalism. Douglas Edwards Award
The Douglas Edwards award was established in 1986 in honor of Edwards, a veteran CBS newsman and long-time friend of St. Bonaventure University. The longest-serving newscaster in the country (he anchored a daily network news report for 40 years without interruption, from 1948 until 1988) Edwards had a long relationship with St. Bonaventure, serving as a member of the Hellinger Award Committee and receiving a honorary degree in 1967. His devotion of reporting accurately, fairly and responsibly led to the establishment of the award, given to an individual in the broadcasting profession that exhibits the similar committment to ethical practices and extraordinary performance in the field. Edwards passed away after a battle with cancer in 1990. The award was discontinued after 2005.

Mosser had been a star in the field of public relations and had recently been promoted to one of the leading jobs at advertising agency Young & Rubicam and remained involved in the affairs of his alma mater until his death, receiving the Alumni Service Award in 1985. The Thomas Mosser Award recognizes the outstanding accomplishments of an individual in the communications field who exhibits the moral and ethical performance as exemplified by Mosser.
