William Butler, '68 made history as captain of the undefeated 1967-1968 basketball season that would be an unforgettable part of St. Bonaventure basketball history and would lead St. Bonaventure to a spot in the NCAA tournament. At 6'3", Butler, known for his aggressive play and polish, finished his career at St. Bonaventure with 1,462 points and 650 rebounds.* During his tenure at St. Bonaventure, William Butler, an economics major from Washington, D.C., was treasurer of his class, awarded the Most Valuable Player by St. Bonaventure, and received an award from Look magazine for being named to the District II All Star Team. Before graduation, he was named the Ideal Bonaventure Student. His jersey number (14) was retired after the 1967-1968 season, and he was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in 1969. Butler was selected by the Boston Celtics in the 1968 NBA draft.
